SANTA Cruz plans to light up the Playa de Las Teresitas in 2016, thanks to re-elected Mayor Jose Manuel Bermudez, who wants the area to be upgraded and properly lit at night.
There have been tentative plans to spruce up Las Teresitas over the last four years, but nothing has been set in stone.
Bermudez, keen to move the project forward, said: “The local authority is working on this project, and we cannot pass another couple of years without light in this area.”
Illuminating the walkways and the beach area is part of the improvement project, which also includes infrastructure work and modernising the sanitation system.
The project, it is believed, will cost around two million euros, and
Bermúdez wants to install the low-energy, environmental-friendly lamps.
Las Teresitas and the darkness on the beach has been a hotspot for night-time trouble over the last few years. Gangs of youngsters are often seen drinking alcohol from the boot of their cars and on the beach, while illegal evening parties are common.
The Mayor and Chief of Police feel this will be eradicated with a facelift for the area.
