View Full Version : Other Lathe Job?

I need a quick job done with a metal lathe, deepening the recess on an alternator pulley by 4mm. I could do it myself, but I left my lathe at home :)

Does anyone know someone with a lathe who would do this for beer money, while I wait? I'm in Golf Del Sur, and have transport.

Sorry Nigel I can't help either.

it's intriguing though.

The Alternator wont produce as much juice as its been down-geared so to speak.

Not too well up on Electricals these days, but is there any same fitting Pulley wheels available. Just swop it over.?

best of luck.

2nd thoughts.....it will of course be Higher Geared.....

Seems a bit drastic, to have to machine a pulley, Got to be some transmission specialists up in Santa Cruz. Dozens of pulley shapes and sizes are manufactured, Fenner for instance in the UK. Possibly a different V section belt would do the job.

Thanks for the replies, but I don't need any opinions on why I'm doing this, or whatever. I just need a chap with a lathe.

Surely some place in Puerto Colon, would have a lathe, pretty essential piece of gear for a lot of Marine work.

What you want and what you get in the way of opinions, is what happens on a open forum....treat it like a pub conversation and take what comes.....the good and the not so good!:)

. I replied for two reasons.

to bring up the Post to the top, trying to be helpful

suggesting a practical alternative in case of difficulties, as I was interested in Your project,

but let things go.

good luck.

Sorry, no offense meant. I could just see this getting out of hand with alternatives :)

I guess I could try Google, but I don't know the correct Spanish for "Mechanical / Engineering Workshop" or "Metal Lathe Work".

I don't trust Google Translate for technical terms

A drawing doesn't need translating. Explore Try Garages for leads.

I know a Rick, at Marina San Miguel. He is a metal fabricator, so was my first choice, but he is rather elusive :)

I know he is now on another boat, not sure which one.

How much do you earn an hour then?

Having served My time on Lathes Drills etc, i would suggest that 10 minutes is very optimistic

I would estimate 30 or 45 minutes if I had to do it

Mind you. the Measurements would be correct to within a few thou.

It may then be neccessary to clean the swarf off the Machine..

... the Measurements would be correct to within a few thou ...

Not that critical, about 0.5mm tolerance would be fine, erring on the side of cut more. I only measured to the nearest 0.1mm anyway. I'm pretty sure I could do this in 20 minutes, and I'm still learning on my lathe. A Jedi Lathemaster would be much quicker.

I've now found a couple of metal workshops in Las Chafiras (Monsoon and Edelma). I've emailed Monsoon, can't find an email address for Edelma on my slow connection.

Many would take the view that the OP has only himself to blame for not getting anywhere, with his initial comments telling posters to sod off & answer my question instead of giving me your stupid opinions.

However I find it refreshing that there are still some people about who are not afraid to speak their mind in response to frivolous & stupid comments.

I just hope the problem is turning.

Your view that you are perfectly entitled to post on an open Forum, just as others are entitled to their's, and yours is off topic as well:tiphat:

Thanks for that, however I wouldn't call the initial comments "frivolous & stupid", just not the type of replies I needed.

I've been using forums of one kind of another for well over 20 years*, so I know how they work, and what happens when they don't :)

* I started with Bulletin Boards, then UseNet (real UseNet, not the download sites) using the Agent News Client. Sadly that far superior method of conferencing has largely been overshadowed by this web-based kludge. As an aside, I believe I am the cause of the use of the word "spam". I will tell the story if asked.
