If you go to any of the dodgy asian shops they'll sell you one that has 1:1 magnification, like the one I've got. Go to a reputable dealer.

Whatever you buy, make sure you get interchangeable ocular lenses. Plossl (sic) type preferably. At that money you should be able to get a nice little reflector, maybe even with lunar and stellar tracking built in! :fireworks:

hi liftman,
been reading a bit about telescopes lately .this will be our first scope ,getting it for the kids.
been looking at the celestron nexstar 130 with the goto mount .was going to get x2 barlow lense,
but I will also check out the plossi.
thanks again for the advice

Nice scope. If it is for kids, then yes, a Barlow may be better as there is better eye relief than a plossl. (ie. you dont need to stick your eye right against the lens to get the full field of view)

just remember to put the scope outside 30min to 1 hour before you want to use it. Otherwise it may well steam up and you will see very little and think you have wasted your money.

I have been watching the skies for years. I'm quite lucky that I have access to a 32 inch newtonian reflector on a regular basis. It's a joy for deep field photography.

hi ,
i will keep in touch as i will probably need some help in the future as i am a total newbie.
have changed my mind on the scope ,am going for the skywatcher explorer 127 mak with the goto mount.
will be ordering it in the next 2/3 days, unless i find something better in the same price range.

The 127 will be better for deep sky objects, the Celeston 130 better for planets. Choices, choices

Liftman ,that 32 inch newtonian reflector,is that one used at the observatory at teide. did you find anything interesting on the moon to observe.
been watching a few videos on youtube of the lunar surface.

No, this one is in Torquay in Devon. I have made tentative contact with the instituto de Astrofisicha to see if I can visit the 4.2m Herschel telescope on Tiede via Brian Cox who was one of my astrophysics tutors for my degree. Here's hoping
