From Island Connections.
Tenerife South Airport closed to traffic
The Reina Sofia airport in South Tenerife is currently experiencing delays and diversions thanks to a plane blocking one of the runways.
According to reports, as the plane was about to take off, to an as yet undisclosed destination, two of the plane's tyres exploded, grounding the plane and rendering it immobile. Works to remove the vehicle from the runway are underway but the airport recently declared that it will be closed to traffic until at least 7.30pm tonight. If you are due to travel or meet an incoming flight it is best to speak to the individual carrier to confirm new arrival / departure information. Some journeys may be cancelled whilst others will be diverted to different airports.

I wonder if the tyres exploding was the very loud noise we heard whilst walking above Ifonche this morning, did anyone else hear it? It must have been about the correct time and it did seem to come from that area.

It was horrible because after Paris one has to wonder....

I understand Tyres blew on the Take-off run.
according to Twitter sources Gran Canaria and Tenerife North were alternative airfileds

Recently a Monarch Plane went tech and they had to fly Technicians and spare in to fix it
Moans about lack of info during the 38 hrs wait........

The tyre incident was two tyres blew. and in shreds.

The Plane was destined for Berlin.

I went to meet my Son on a flight from Gatwick which was due to land at about 1pm on arrival they had been diverted to Fuetaventura sorry for spelling they spent two hours on runway there and eventually landed back in south at 4pm but waited again on runway for bus to terminal 45 mins.no buses as airport was so hectic. Nightmare Another friend who was going to Manchester at 1pm got taken by bus to North airport as incoming flight had landed there they eventually had a schedule to leave at 6 and were touching down in Porto to change crew .
