Conditions of purchase re. apartements

I'm thinking of initially renting a property in Tenerife and I'm wondering that if I go ahead and then purchase one, how does this relate to the situation in the UK?
i.e. Would the property be leasehold or freehold? Or is there something completely different in place in Tenerife or other Canarian islands.
