THE Canarian Government’s Ministry of Health has paid out more than 20 million euros through malpractice in the last five years.
But despite this huge figure, just 28% of the cases processed by complainants were successful.
A total of 948 cases were dealt with between 2010 to 2015, and the most compensation paid by the MoH was a total of 5,104,322.15 euros in 2012. And last year’s total amounted to 4,279,298.19 euros.
However, these figures do not correspond to cases from this year or even last year, because the compensation claims reveal figures for when the case is settled and not when the action begins.
It can take up to six years for all the legal avenues to be exhausted.
Canaries’ Minister of Health Jesus Morera said there was “a slightly upward trend in the submitting of claims in recent years”. But he added that there had been no peaks relating to the economic-crisis years.
“Every time we do more sophisticated treatments, which are more and more complex, the possibility of bad results does increase,” he admitted.
