A BELGIAN man, who had threatened to kill his former partner, was captured by the Guardia Civil on Sunday in Guia de Isora.
Joel Louis Gilbert Bourlard, 38, Tenerife’s “most-wanted” man, was spotted at around 11am by a police officer.
Back-up was called and Bourland was arrested and transferred to the holding facility at Playa San Juan.
The Guardia Civil had been searching for him since he fled on 31st March when charged in the Arona court for Gender Violence against his former partner, Ucanca González Arias.
Bourland, who was found guilty, took advantage of a “comfort” break, which enabled him to go outside the court.
He fled on foot after learning that he would serve nine months in prison. The Belgian had broken a restraining order preventing him from approaching his ex-partner, successfully removing his tagging device in the Arona area.
His escape embarrassed the Guardia Civil, which put together a large task force to find him.
Bourland, who had a lengthy criminal record, was upset by the couple’s break-up. And a few days after trying to restart the relationship, he is understood to have locked up his girlfriend, keeping her tied to a bed.
Ucanca Gonzalez eventually escaped, only to be found by her ex and threatened again. This continued with telephone calls and whatsapp messages.
After finally alerting police, Ucanca González was present when Bourland was summoned to the court in Icod.
Among the charges, he was also accused of stealing 1,000 euros from his former partner, which he spent on drugs and alcohol.
While the Belgian was on the run, Ucanca González received 24-hour daily protection from a pair of Guardia Civil guards because of the high risk from Bourland, who had issued her with death threats.
During court proceedings, it was revealed that Bourland had convictions in Belgium for possession of firearms and committing violent acts.
