ELÍAS Castro, Regional Transport Director, visited Adeje this week to see for himself the problems created by traffic in tourist zones throughout the South.
Castro met Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, together with Ermitas Moreira and Andrés Pérez, Tourism and Transport Councillors respectively, with a view to resolving the situation.
“Our Department of Traffic do understand that one of the most pressing problems is to maintain fluid traffic movement in the Canarian tourist regions,” said the transport chief.
“There are many residents working in the sector, as well as the tourists themselves, and these tourist zones support an incredible volume of traffic – private buses and hire-cars, taxis, etc.
“For that reason, it is important for us to see the situation for ourselves, talk to local councils about their concerns and how we can introduce changes in the regulation and organisation of the transport sector itself. ”
Mayor Fraga added: “It is fundamental for us to combine the mark of quality tourism with the quality of the infrastructures: services, complementary offers, transport and mobility.
“This is essential if we are to continue attracting visitors because it is one of the demands of tourists and also of those who live here.”
As a result of these meetings, a working group will be set up, with representatives from the relevant councils, to discuss actual problems and resolutions.
In turn, it is hoped that it will lead to fresh laws and traffic regulations, designed to meet today’s needs and problems.
