EUROPE’S tallest building, The Shard in London, could lose its lofty title following plans by developers in Spain to build an even bigger skyscraper.
Since 2011, the triangle shaped Shard tower has dominated the London skyline, earning it the prestige of being Europe’s tallest inhabitable structure.
It stands 310 metres tall and 72 of the 95 floors are in use, the upper floors accounting for the spire.
But new plans for a six-tower Madrid development could knock it off its perch, with one tower included in the complex planned to be 70 floors, also topping 300m.
Antonio Béjar, head of the company behind the project Distrito Castellana Norte (DCN), announced the lavish plans.
He said of the skyscrapers: “They will transform the city’s skyline and put Madrid among the main European capital cities. The project is closer than ever to starting.”
The entire development forms part of a wider regeneration scheme for the northern part of the city, which has been progressing over the years. And DCN is currently applying for all the necessary permits to begin construction.
The tallest inhabitable building in the EU, after The Shard, is the Commerzbank Tower at 259m, followed by the Messeturm, 257m, both in Frankfurt.
In fourth and fifth place are Madrid’s Torre de Cristal, at 249m, then the Torre Cepsa, standing 248.3m high. And the new development will sit close to the capital city’s existing skyscrapers.
But despite London’s Shard possibly losing its crown, the ever-sprawling city may reclaim it with more towering buildings popping up.
At least nine skyscrapers are either under construction in the Big Smoke, or have been approved – and all guaranteed to provide stiff necks for sightseers!
Shortest of the bunch is Old Street’s Canaletto (97m) and the tallest – so far – is the 211-metre Herzog & de Meuron Building, near Canary Wharf.
