LORO Parque Fundación is helping efforts to conserve a fading species of parrot, common to the South American countries of Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay.
A recent survey shows that fewer than 4,000 of the vinaceous-breasted wild birds remain throughout the three countries – a figure considered extremely low.
The parrots have a close relationship with Araucaria forests, which have become degraded – thus, contributing immensely to their disappearance.
Loro Parque Fundación (LPF) is supporting various actions to help preserve them in Brazil, in collaboration with the Amigos do Meio Ambiente (AMA) association, and with Guyra Paraguay, a BirdLife International partner.
The Fundación’s next aim is to reduce the pressure of human activities affecting the bird’s natural habitat, and support an on-site programme, to be developed with landowners, associations and schools.
The foundation has also included the vinaceous-breasted parrot in its breeding programme, enabling Loro Parque visitors to appreciate these rare birds.
Loro Parque, which has had a commitment to conservation – via research and education – since its creation in 1994, has so far invested $16,000,000 in over 120 international programmes.
