THE Alliance for Tourism Excellence (Exceltur) has revealed the full extent of the tourism boost as a result of ongoing problems in North Africa.
It has confirmed that around 800,000 tourists have come to the Canary Islands instead of using planned trips to destinations such as Egypt, Turkey and Tunisia.
Exceltur Executive Vice President Jose Luis Zoreda told a press conference: “Tourism has established itself as an engine of the national economy. We have seen accelerating growth in the first quarter, which raises the confidence to maximum levels. We expect record highs.”
Tourism grew again in the first quarter of the year, making it “ten consecutive quarters of increases,” said Zoreda. “This time it was over 3% year-on-year, and our sector is leading the recovery of the entire Spanish economy.”
This has been possible through a sharp increase in foreign demand, at a rate much higher than anticipated following terrorist attacks in Turkey and Egypt, along with the perceived insecurity in some European urban destinations following the Paris and Brussels terrorist attacks.
For 2016, Exceltur expects growth above initial expectations because of geopolitical instability, which will affect competing destinations such as the Eastern Mediterranean.
