SUPERMARKET chain Mercadona continues to boost the local community, buying local produce worth nearly half-a-billion euros last year.
It also used over 100 Canarian suppliers, and its bill came to just over 466m euros.
The Valencian chain closed the year with 81 supermarkets in Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, and a total staff count on the islands of 4,096 employees.
Nationally, the chain has also had a fine year. The parent company paid out 277m euros in bonuses to its staff in Spain for achieving targets, 15 million of which went to workers in its Canarian supermarkets.
Also, its Canaries’ stores last year donated more than 170 ton of food to food banks in Santa Cruz and Las Palmas, Gran Canaria.
