A lot of people have been asking on the forum how you go about getting your children into state school... so, as I have just gone through the matriculation process with my eldest child, I thought I'd put down the info for others while it's still fresh in my mind.

Before I start, I must point out that this is for a child who's starting school for the first time (i.e. 3 years old) and is for the Municipality of Guia de Isora. I do not know if other Municipalities have slightly different rules, and I assume that if you are tranferring a child from the English education system to the Spanish state schools other paperwork will be needed in addition to this. You will have to check that out for yourself, or if someone else has gone through the process maybe they can post their experiences on this thread.

A scan of the piece of paper that this info is taken from is located in our gallery HERE.

Matriculation happens in March/April. You are given the info for the paperwork you have to present etc in March and it has to be done by around 19th April. This may differ slightly from year to year, but it will be around about the same dates.

You matriculate your child the march before they actually start in September.

You need to take along the following paperwork :

1) You need to provide only ONE of the following for each parent ;
'Certificado de Residencia' or the Certificate from the Ayuntamiento that you are resident at your address.
Empadronimiento (get this at your Ayuntamiento too).
'Tarajeta Censal' or Census Card (if you are on the voting register you will have this. Also from the Ayuntamiento where you live, if you need to get one).
2) A photocopy of the DNI/NIE of both parents and the child (if he or she has one). This can be the piece of paper you got from the Police station, or a copy of your residencia. It's also a good idea to take the original along with you too... that goes for all the documents listed.

3) Your Libro de Familia and a photocopy of the child's page from it.

4) Photocopy of the 'Declaración de la Renta' of both parents. This is obtained from the Tributaria or Hacienda opposite the Green Hospital in Las Americas. Get there early and pull a ticket, as it's one of those queuing jobs! It's basically a tax return, but it's the official stamped one. Tell the people there that you need it for matriculation for your child and they'll sort you out. If you are on the dole you need one, however if one of the parents doesn't work and hasn't claimed, you only need it for the working parent. You will need at least one though, so if you're planning to get your kid into school in the future, make sure at least one of you has a contract of some sort!

5) If the child has brothers or sisters in the school, you need documentation from the school to prove it. This bumps you up the list so siblings can all go to the same school. If not, you can forget this one.

6) If your child has any disabilities or chronic illnesses you will need medical documentation to support it from the relevant doctor or specialist.

That's all for now, but I will be scanning in and uploading the form with instructions of how to fill it in over the next few days when I get round to it.

Hopefully if you are armed with this info enough in advance, you can get the paperwork sorted out beforehand and not have to rush like we did!!! You can do it all apart from the Declaración de la Renta, which has to be done in April as it's the tax return and as in the UK, it's only done at this time of year.

Feel free to ask any questions below and I (or someone else) will do my best to answer them.

Please read through the posts in this sub forum to get as much information as you can find. Then you can ask more specific questions. People need to know where you will be living in Tenerife and age of your daughter for example, and whether you are looking for her to be in state or private school.

Hi there, we're moving to tenerife in March and were wondering if anyone can tell us if there are many Spanish state schools around the Las Chafiras area? Our boys are 6 and 9 years old and we think they're at an age where they would learn the language very quickly.

Does anyone know how old the children have to be before applying for secondary education please?

I have found the answer to my own question - they transfer at 12 years old.

Many people have different opinions on this matter. I am still here 7 years on but I have no children of school age to consider.

There are advantages and disadvantages for every person who makes a move, so you have to consider all the options including the personalities of your children, and decide whether they would benefit or not from the change.

I was a forces child of the 50's & 60's and went to over a dozen schools, less moves than many of my contemporaries, but it didn't hamper my school work and I worked for my teaching qualifications and an honours degree. I have been an educationalist all my life.

Some people only thrive in home soil, sheltered and supported by deep roots in a community, others thrive by being replanted in fresh beds and given new experiences and opportunities.

Good luck with your move!

Thanks.

Since moving back from Tenerife 5 years ago. We haved moved about every 6 months so my kids are ok with moving. They are the ones that really want to move so it has been a family decision. We will never know until we try for ourselves.

This is a question Ive been looking to find out about too. Im in a bit of a different situation as Im currently training for 12 months, hoping to qualify as a Hairdresser by June 2014. Im a single parent to one child and would love to make the move to Tenerife but have no idea about the schooling, whether its free in some, how much in others?! Its a big move for me and my son, would like to find out if any other single parents have made this move? How? Any regrets? I feel that this is my dream, am i being selfish or can my son get a good education then college etc?? So many questions!

If you dont speak Spanish or have Strong connections here dont do it as it is not easy here and as a single parent you will be very much on your own.

Hi just reading through posts as we want to move very soon with our 2year old boy after returning to uk for family illness, we have nie and residentia etc but I'm afraid don't speak Spanish but is it possible to take a Spanish speaker with you to help get into state school or is it best to stick to private English school as worried about understanding how he's getting on etc whilst at a state school??

Many thanks

not really up on this subject but i would have thought that at 2 years old he would be going to day care , ie guarderia witch you will have to pay for so i think this is the question you should be asking , for recommendations from other people in the same situation as you self with young children , it is always best to take a spanish speaker with you , but i am sure if you get any recommendation the people will let you know if this needed .health care is a priority ie will one of you have a proper job ,be self employed , or have to pay private , state or private school will be something for you to think about in a few years time
