Today the Spanish Government announced that the experiment to reduce the speed limit from 120km/hr to 110km/hr has ended.

We will be back to 120 km/hr in the very near future(in the matter of days, July 1st).

Did it affect you much and did you think it was a good thing?

They say it saved the country 450 million € when they reduced the speed limit and it helped the enviroment.

I would be interested to know how much additional revenue was raised in speeding fines :)

I think it was a pointless exercise. Money wasted by the Government in replacing all the signs (even with sticky labels) and now have to go and take them all off again although no doubt some of the speeding fines will go towards the cost......and I don't think! The Guardia Civil coffers will remain closed until the big Christmas bash! Personally I think it is up to the driver to economise on fuel which is what the exercise was meant to be about. If a driver wants to own a 3L gas guzzler, drive at 120kph and pay for the petrol then that's up to them (personally I couldn't afford that and don't have a 3L gas guzzler). Maybe they should bring that law in, if you own a small economically driven car you can drive at 160kph and if you own a big car that drinks petrol then you can only do 80kph lol.

It is really incredible what is going in this country. First they do spend nearly 30.000 Euros to get 110 km/h stickers and now we need again stickers to go back to 120 km/h, spending money again.

I am sorry but I dont believe that the government did save money because less fuel they sell less taxes for them.

Well, 30.000€ is nothing to a country the size of Spain but I get your point. To change it after just 3 months seems to me that the "maths" did not work out and they did a U-turn (excuse pun).

And that is what I thought originally, okay the country saves petrol but does´nt the governemnt want us to spend more on fuel so they earn more through taxes?

The only logical reason for me to keep it at 110km/hr would have been for safety reasons. If accidents had been reduced over the last 3 months drastically then it would be worth keeping.

What a nonsense the whole project was in the first place!

I got "foot ache" trying to keep the car at 110 km. Sounds silly but the car seems easier to drive at 120 km.

How is the €450 million "saving" worked out then?

450 million€???!!!
No way - if that was the case they wouldnt change it back again - not with the austerity measures they are trying. Load of political rubbish I think!

Yeah, but they probably make 800 million from the tax on the extra fuel.

The 110 limit was not an austerity measure, it was a fuel saving measure as Spain purchased the majority of it's oil from Libya and we did not know what the effect of the conflict would have on supplies.

Has the 110 limit been a success? Well, we have not had petrol stations running out of fuel...

The government would certainly (rightly) have been critisized had supplies run out.

Agree with what your saying. But my car still doing 100 kl per 7.2 liters.so i didn't save fuel.

If it was a real saving of 405meuros, then the government would be better off keeping the limit at 110 kmph. With the on going cost savings with fewer accidents etc. at the end of the year all legally registered residents could then be given a tax free Christmas bonus from the hacienda. That would do more to boost the local economy than 3 or 4% increase in tourism and the feel good factor that would be generated would be enourmous. No?

It does save a lot in fuel consumption... as a car's optimal economic consumption is usually at around 55km/hr, so each km/hr over that makes it considerable less efficient. I understand your point about taxes, but taxes are only a small percentage of the cost, so if they saved 450 million, then the tax percentage of that would be around 27 million, so there's still a huge saving.

In reply to the OP, I wasn't that bothered. It did slow me down a bit, as I understood the reasoning behind it, so I was conscious of my speed. I think some of the speed freaks on the motorway reduced their speeds too... rather than doing 140km/hr they did 130 instead :D

Yeah, but they probably make 800 million from the tax on the extra fuel. How do you work that out? is tax at 177%

Lucky you lot. You will now be able to drive about 6mph faster. Slightly quicker than walking pace. Man, the tarmac will be on fire!

My calculations were based on the rate of from 4th January 2011 the Spanish duty rate for the road fuels unleaded petrol, diesel, biodiesel and bioethanol is 0.5895€ per litre (2.65€ per imperial gallon or 2.20 per U.S. gallon).[5] Value Added Tax at 20% is also charged on the price of the fuel and on the duty. I then painstakingly subtracted the 10km/hr speed difference and then just guessed and added a bit for extra effect.

The 100km limit made precious little difference, the taxis and numerous other drivers were still sitting on your tailgate when you were doing the "legal" 110km/hr. There was never a policeman around when one was needed as you pulled over and they zoomed past doing at least 130km/hr + !!!

Hmm... Really; What difference does it really make between 110 and 120, making 120 worthwhile in any way?
Going from Los Cris to Santa Cruz it'll save a whopping 3 minutes 15 seconds, going in 120 instead of 110...
