Risk of death compared with winning the lottery
Clinical bottom line

The chances of dying between Friday and Monday is 1100 times more than that of winning the lottery.
Source of data

UK National Statistics (www.statistics.gov.uk)
UK Government actuaries Department (www.gad.gov.uk/)

What the sources tell us

Total number of deaths in the UK per year = 571,911
Total number of deaths in the UK per day = 571,911/365 = 1,567
Population of the UK = 60,587,000
Odds of dying in the UK per day = 1 in (60,587,000/1,567) = 1 in 38,667
Odds of dying over three days (Fri, Sat, Sun) = 1 in 38,667 x 3 = 1 in 12,889

Give us the odds

Odds of dying in the UK per day = 1 in (60,587,000/1,567) = 1 in 38,667
Odds of dying over three days (Fri, Sat, Sun) = 1 in 38,667 x 3 = 1 in 12,889
Chance of winning the UK National Lottery = 1 in 13,983,816
The chances of dying between Friday and Monday is 1100 times more than that of winning the lottery

Bummer......

Bugger, no point getting one then. But if I can't win it I hope someone from the Island does.

but is it a valid transaction as in the uk a " national lottery ticket " can only be claimed by a uk resident. does the euro millions have different rules.

To do the Uk National Lottery you must be UK resident and can only buy in UK ,
Can't even look at my on line Lottery account now while in Tenerife, message comes up blocking
Suspect it must be Spanish Eurolottery being bought in Tenerife so different rules
Winning ticket can be void if UK rules broken

thanks but that still does not answer my question if a uk holiday maker bought a euromillions ticket here in tenerife at the lottery shop is the ticket valid. i have not heard of any problems if or when this as happened here. has anyone else experienced or know anyone who has been caught out by rules we are not sure about. i have scanned both the uk and spanish websites but cannot find any info on this

Playing overseas: Any tickets purchased while abroad cannot win prizes
The National Lottery terms and conditions – which are only roughly 40,000 words long – prevent anyone overseas from winning any money on the lottery if the ticket was bought online in a foreign country.

Many people have bought tickets for years blissfully unaware of this fact.
This means that those abroad who win any type of sum can be refused a prize payout from Camelot - including the Europe-wide Euromillions lottery.
We took on the case of Chris Jones who won over £5,000 on the Euromillions while in Spain, but was then refused the prize from Camelot. [read the full story: Lottery tickets that cannot win ].
Bizarrely, the rules did not prevent him from playing the lottery abroad but did stop his ticket from winning.
This is Money argued that Camelot should use technology to stop people being able to play online while overseas - blocking them from accessing the website.

The story was picked up by media outlets UK-wide and alerted those who buy tickets and win while abroad that any prize winnings would be null and void.

if you buy a ticket from a lotto booth in the UK or Spain it is valid no matter where you live. The problems arise if you buy the ticket on line.

To be safe I always buy a few weeks before I go on hols, would slit my wrists if I won and Camelot declared it void??
On line access has now been blocked so cannot access outside UK
Only ever win a £10 or less anyway!!!

this was my first thought, again i am talking about buying a ticket from a booth here in tenerife not on-line as we all know is against the rules
