Another row has broken out over health services on Tenerife.

The Canary Health Service last week announced that they were considering closing a ward in the HUC Hospital Universitario de Canarias at La Laguna during the summer holidays to allow doctors to take their holidays.

Unions have described the proposal as “vile” and an insult to the intelligence of staff and users of the public health system.

They claim there is an agreement which prevents doctors from taking holidays all at the same time and that the problems have arisen, for the first time in 40 years, because of a 12% cut in financing.

Intersindical Canaria also allege that cuts are already taking place at the hospital, including closures of an operating room and in staffing through a non-replacement policy.

However, a statement issued by the hospital said they only intended to close one ward or a group of beds, not an entire floor as suggested. This would not affect patients.

Operating theatres were also working “as normal”.
