Is there a glimmer of light at the end of the gloomy tunnel of unemployment in the Canary Islands?

Latest figures for May show the archipelago was the only independent community in Spain to register a decrease.

Unemployment went down by 2,432 people, the second consecutive month where a decrease has been registered. However, there are still 254,341 men and women in the Canary Islands out of work.

When compared to the statistics of May of 2010, the decrease is 4.35% (11,575 people), the best performance of all the independent communities.

The construction industry does seem to be picking up a bit as the sector showed a reduction of 1,046 in the jobless tally but 20 more people lost their jobs in agriculture and 1,928 more in the services sector.

Across Spain, there are 4.18 million people unemployed as at May, a reduction of 1.8% on the previous month. Apart from December of 2010, this is the second highest fall since May of 1997.

Employers´ organisations say every effort must be made by the Government to maintain the decrease.

Thanks for that info - the place certainly seems to be a bit busier at the moment. Callao has had teams of gardeners employed all round the place, and lots of places seem to be getting faces lifts!
