Hi all,

I'd like to know where I can find any farmers markets where they sell local produce here in Northern Tenerife... I find the fruits and vegs in the supermarkets like Mercadona etc to be quite sorry excuses, really... not fresh at all. :(

So I'm interested in where to find fresh stuff. :)

Pooh there's a municipal farmers' market every day except Sundays in the market building located in Puerto de la Cruz, the area called El Tejar, very central. There's usually plenty of parking in the underground, except Saturdays when they also have a flea market.

I'll just go see where I can find a map now. It's very central, and has a supermarket as well as a coffee shop and some inexpensive bazaar-type clothing shops, a book and paper store and household goods.

I'll come back with a map and maybe some photos in a few minutes. :0

There are bound be be loads, but not being a northerner I only know of The Mercado Nuestra Senora de Africa (African Market) Santa Cruz with over 300 stalls selling fresh local produce, which is lovely and I hate markets.

I have heard of the Tacoronte Farmers' Market with over 100 stalls but never been :ashamed: It is open Saturday and Sunday 8-2.30 (I think)

Pooh the local farmers' market in Puerto is on Avenida Blas Perez Gonzalez and is easy to find. Here's a photo:

Yes there's also a farmers' market in La Matanza and a very popular one in Tacoronte if you feel like a little drive out on the weekend. I've also been a few times to the one in Santa Cruz - Nuestra Señora de Africa and it's also interesting if you want to drive to Santa Cruz for your produce.

I'll come back with photos and more details of the Tacoronte market if you're interested.

But now I'm going to watch the Monaco royal wedding on TV....back later!

Thanks a lot... I had heard about the Tacoronte market, now that you mention it, but forgotten about it. It's probably worth a look.

Thanks a lot! Yes, I know where that is, even though I didn't know there was a farmers market there, and haven't checked out much yet in that specific area - haven't had time yet!
But as usual, the knowledge in this forum, and especially your deep knowledge of everything up here in the North, can be counted on! Thanks again!
(And yes, I'm very interested in the Tacoronte market too - it's only a 10 minuted drive there, or so... But enjoy the wedding!)

The Tacaronte market is supposed to be outstanding. If you go come back and tell us as I have always fancied going but never got to it.

I live very near here and shop there all the time, there is also a butcher, a couple of delicatessens and a fishmonger. The fruit and vegetable stalls are on the first floor and tend to only be open mornings, there is one that is organic, if you are that way inclined.

Thanks for the info! Good to know about the mornings, since I'm usually not very early unless I have to... :p

My introduction to this place was when I had to attend the Trafico office on the top floor of this building.

The fruit and veg stalls are the real thing, from farm to shopper.

These stalls always remind me of days gone by when carrots sometimes came in strange shapes and potatoes had dried mud on them and when you cooked them they had taste and flavour.

Oh I do hate this prepackaged world.

We went to on in La Laguna by mistake when we drove up there a few weeks ago. It was huge and had everything, not sure on the directions as I said we just happened to find it, but they had fruit, veg, butchers, fishmonsgers, etc it was fab. Next to a big pedestrainised square, not that far away from the cathedral. Also been to the Puerto indoor one too and thats brill.

The Tacoronte Farmers' market has its own webpage,

Link Here (http://www.mercadillodelagricultor.com/index.htm)

The opening hours are 8 am till 2 pm on Saturdays and Sundays all year.

They have many photos to see if you click on 'fotos' in the left hand side panel and a webcam that's operative during their opening hours so tomorrow (Sunday) you may get a look. I haven't checked it out to see if the webcam is working. There's also a map link 'búscanos' in the left panel.

They also sell homemade breads and cakes, honey, wine, flowers and plants.
Take some large shopping bags with you. You will enjoy a visit there.
It's impossible to come away empty handed.

Here are some photos I took of the Sta. Cruz market "Nuestra Señora de Africa" in March, 2003.
I haven't been back since then with a camera but there will have been some changes lately I imagine.
