Arona's mayor is to draw an annual salary of 71,000 euros following the approval of the council's wage structure for the coming year.
Despite criticism from opposition parties at the wage bill and the failure to streamline departments to save money, Mayor José Alberto González Reverón insisted his salary had fallen in real terms by 15% since 2008 and his new figure was 'an act of generosity' on his part, adding that the cost to the corporation of the 13 councillors from his party was fully justified.
