We have one in our garden in Tenerife. It's a yellow one and grows like mad. We always end up taking a couple of feet of growth off it. It smells lovely at night.

I haven't got a Jasmine plant, but outside my door I have a Curry plant (Helichrysum italicum):p and the smell on a warm night is like a Tikka Masala, a bit of a bitch if you don't like Indian food.:hungry:

I have a couple of jasmine, but not the one I really want, which is jasminum officinale (http://www.infojardin.com/foro/showthread.php?t=128288&page=63), the true jasmine also known as poet's jasmine which I knew in Mallorca which has the best perfume at night.

If you want something to perfume not only your own garden but the whole neighbourhood, try dama de noche (cestrum nocturnum) which is a heavenly exotic scent of a tiny night blooming flower that is very strong. This year ours has grown and bloomed like never before:

Aaaawah ...hummmm...lovely ! I'm not sure of the name of the ones I lost ....but could have been "cestrum nocturnum" , larger and shiny leaves , with bunches of flowers hanging , and the scent was divine

I had a beautiful jasmine that covered the entire wall then almost overnight it turned brown and died - I told OH to cut it back and leave in the hope new shoots would appear but men being men he dug it out - think he is planning on replacing with one of these

Aww lovely! Sunspot, I used to buy these in white or lilies and have them in a huge tall glass vase when I was in the UK. Brought back memories! :flower::flower::flower:

Another flower that I assume you cannot get here but I used to have them in the UK, Night Scented Stocks, a good old fashioned cottage garden plant that smells lovely.

Zara yes you can get scented stocks here. We've had them for years in our garden and they can be bought at most garden centers here.

The Spanish name is Alheli. I found the white ones with single flowers had the strongest scent.
Here's a photo (http://www.pbase.com/canarybird/image/112172127.jpg) of a double one from our garden.

Yes the Dama de Noche is sometimes called Galan de Noche.

Here's a photo (http://www.pbase.com/canarybird/image/81005387.jpg) of how it looks during the day when the flowers are closed.

And the perfume really is strong. I love to leave the windows open at night and have the scent fill the house.

Zara I'm sure you could try them in pots as long as the pots are large enough, not less than 20 cm across.
Some stocks are annuals and some are biennials, but the double flowering ones are sterile so we always collected seeds from the single-flowered ones.

When we didn't have enough, I bought more at the garden center.

Here's a link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthiola_incana) with more about them. They do grow well here.

Years ago we had an old gardener who loved these flowers as much as I did.
He faithfully collected the seeds and planted them each year in our garden.
When he passed away I took some of the flowers he'd grown to his funeral.
