Excavations have started in Santa Cruz on the Vía Litoral which will link the Plaza de España with Avenida Anaga.

The first 25 metre beams to support the roof of the underpass have been set. Works originally started last November diverting traffic on to the road lying parallel to the Avenida.

The total amount of debris that has to be removed will amount to around 150,000 tons, equivalent to an area covering 60 Olympic swimming pools. A lot of the debris is from filling used along the coast to reclaim land and will be much easier to excavate and recycle.

The completion of the underpass will have many beneficial side effects; it will save driving time as there won't be any traffic lights, improve access between the north and the south of the city, cut down on noise and pollution and divert traffic and therefore congestion from the Avda. Tres de Mayo, giving residents a better quality of life. It will also open up the dock area to the public where at present all the containers and vehicles are parked.

The work is expected to be completed by the end of 2012.
