No, but did get a bit of move on at Morrisons

Why do we scrub Down and wash Up?

It refers to the older days. Often, people would use an abrasive cloth, starting with their head and moving down, to remove or loosen all the dirt/old skin/ other. The reason they started with their head was because when they finished and go tot their feet, they kept the soap and fine cloth on the floor so they could grab it and clean all the stuff off. This whole process was referred to as scrubbing down, and then washing up", later shortened. When showers and baths were invented, they both still meant a part of the bathing process and were separated into different phrases.

A Bridesmaid many years ago when I was about five or six years old. It was so exciting. There was two of us, myself and a cousin, and we had to stop at the brides house overnight the night before. I can remember being sat on the kitchen table before we went to bed and rags were put in our long hair. We'd had a bath in a tin tub in front of the fire and dried with really rough towels. I couldn't sleep because the rags had been wound in too tight. On the day, we wore long white satin dresses with neck, hem and sleeve frills trimmed with pink bows, stand-up brimmed bonnets tied with pink satin ribbon, our long ringlets hanging down our backs, and matching heart shaped muffs in white satin with long pink ribbon trails, and whitened canvas sandals. I still have a photo...black and white of course.

I've been Bestman only once which was over 40 years ago and of course Father of the Bride in June 2011 and I will be again this September. As Father of the Bride, it was only my second time wearing a kilt as I feel uncomfortable with all the buckles, belts, laces etc. But all the rest of the wedding party males were wearing it so I conformed. Must admit I felt better that time than the first. Great day, 130 guests all day with another 100 at night. Live band of course! Got up at 7am and went to bed at 4.45am the next day. Adrenalin rush (and alcohol)

Story of my life MM. have always took in old rescue dogs that no one wants anymore. I used to take in and retrain big problem dogs, but can't handle them as I've got older.
It's not been my living. Luckily I've been self employed with my own business for the last thirty years which has enabled me flexibility with my hours, I had good staff! and could take the dogs with me to work if necessary.
I only have three now, a cross collie who is around eighteen - nineteen years old. A cross Patterdale terrier aged around fourteen (she's the one I'm writing the book about), and a border terrier who is only four. She was my brothers, but he had to go into hospital for a long time so I ended up with her. I had a cross Bedlington- Poodle who died last year, she was seventeen.

We live near the river, so have a lot of wild ducks who come to us for feeding, and also a lot of escapee pheasants from the pheasant shoot up the road.

Have you any?

No, just wee Isla. I had a rabbit and a goldfish when I was a boy. At least you seem to live in an area suitable for dogs. So many folk have dogs and they stay in the house all day. Self employment does give you the flexibility, this allows me to watch Isla on a Wednesday. Been self employed for about 10 years now.

My dad would have called you a Death Hunter  (mortgages weren't available in his day....we'll not for the working class).

You've always been into music, so it's good that you still take an interest in it..... Still think you ought to have a go at songwriting.

Ardent fan - Yes. Groupie - No. Never ever seen a real star/group live. Seen plenty tribute bands and impersonators though.
Thinking back, I think my first love was Bill Haley & The Comets, followed by Elvis who lasted forever. With Adam Faith, Rolling Stones, Queen, Bruce Springsteen, they're the ones who stand out most in my memory box, and my favorite of all time - Take That..... gave up on music when they split up, even tried the helpline but couldn't get through :wink2:

I remember my first favourite band being The Shadows then Dave Clarke Five. At secondary school it was The Beatles AND The Stones. Most couldn't understand how I could like both. Best Female - Best has got to be Barbra Streisand, God given talent. She can sing anything. I particularly loved her in A Star is Born. Great actress too.

Best Male - Elvis, although I wasn't a great fan at the time, I have learned to appreciate his talent. Just a unique voice. Don Henley of the Eagles and certainly McCartney are up there.

Elvis was definitely the King. even my mum and dad liked him. I forgot about Barbara Streisand, I had to arrange my sisters funeral a few years ago, and had 'The Way We Were' song played at the end of the service. It was so apt, she unfortunately veered down a rocky path, sad really, she was such an educated woman. Secretive too, we never found out why she turned to drink.

Anyhow, on a lighter note, excuse the pun. Who was/is your favourite group of all time? I'm guessing The Eagles?

Sheffield United for my hubby, Sheffield Wednesday for brother who lives with us, and Leeds United for me. They're absolute rubbish now. I remember when Don Revie was their manager, and there wasn't another team in UK who could play a full team of internationals, even some sat on the bench.... Billy Bremner, Joe Jordan , Eddie Gray, Paul Reaney, Paul Madeley, Norman Hunter, Eddie Gray, Terry Yorath, Alan Clarke, Johhny Giles, David Harvey, Terry Cooper, Jack Charlton, Gary Sprake, Trevor Cherry, Gordon McQueen...... Half of them were Scottish internationals! the rest English, Irish or Welsh. What a team, what great times, driving up the M1 to Elland Road.

He's not a chip off the old block then!

My hubby was a joiner from leaving school for many years, only left when I set up my own business and he came into partnership with me.

As for Tenerife, should have gone on 5th of Jan. Had to cancel, hubby had very bad chest infection, he's Asthmatic, and has COPD, so he was grounded. The docs are still trying to clear it up, hence me being up and about in the wee small hours some nights. First time I've spent January at home for thirty years.

Fuerteventura only 18 year ago. I had been abroad before on business and playing in the band, but my first proper package holiday was Fuerteventura for a week in July. Strangely enough, I came across a photo over the weekend that was taken there. I got burned badly on my first day. I was doing as recommended, slapping on the factor 30, repeating after swimming. Then the sun went down about 4pm and I thought that was it for the day. fell asleep on the sunbed and woke up 2 hours later and the sun had come back out. My skin felt 2 sizes too small. The photo was taken the next day in my "man from Del Monte" costume, long white trousers, long sleeved white shirt and straw hat. Never again. First 2 days of my holiday ruined, but got the hang of it on the third day.

Yes, but not as bad as my hubby. It was the second time we'd been abroad and went to the Algarve in June. We sunbathed on the beach in the morning, and then went to a beach cafe for lunch, we got talking to another couple and spent the afternoon drinking with them, not realising the sun was fierce and moving round, and didn't re-apply sun cream.
About five o clock in the afternoon we started burning up and went back to the hotel. We filled the bath with cool water and took it in turns to cool down, the bath wasn't big enough for both of us. We stayed there that night trying to get our temperatures down, as I knew we had been really stupid. I was luckier than John having darker skin so my burns weren't as severe, but John who is fair ended up having to go to the hospital with his burns, which has left his shoulders scarred.
Lesson learned.... Hard way. But not as bad as the time we came off our hired motor bike on the Causeway in Corfu. but that's another story.

It keeps me happy, and I don't know how I found time to work.

What would you change in your life if you could?

Aye, but apart from that what have the Romans done or us ..... :D

Only thing would be my bank balance ... As in increase it ! :D ... To let me do the things I like doing more often.

Do you live in a city, town, village or hamlet ?

My Mum and dad used to say... If you've got your health you've got everything. Have to agree there's a lot of truth there!
But having been on both side of the monetary fence, I know which side I prefer to be on.

Anyhow, Penistone is supposed to be a market town but it's not much bigger than any of Sheffield's sub-areas. it on the very north West of Sheffield on the approach to the Woodhead Pass, which is one of the routes over the Pennines. I was born and lived in the city until I was about thirty and then moved away! rather like when we had our first place in Tenerife which was in LA, but as we got older, outgrew Veronica's! and moved to LC.

Are you in village or town etc.

Agrre 100% that your health is more important than wealth, but it's good to have financial security too, because if you don't that can affect your health !! .... bit of a chicken and egg scenario !!

I'm a towny and that's what I like. Kilmarnock has a population of about 55,000. We live 15 mins walk from the town centre in a nice residential quiet cul-de-sac. Stayed in Kilmarnock all my life including 27 years in this house.

Would you ever move full time to Tenerife ?

MM... That was the original plan..... back in the 90s we bought a fabulous 3 bed, 3 bath place with massive terrace and fantastic sea view. This was to be our retirement home. We had worked hard from being young and this was the fruit of our labour (awful cliche, sorry.) But, there's always a but isn't there.
I got Cancer. I don't know if you know anyone personally who has, I'm sure they'll tell you the same, it is life changing.
I was convinced I was going to die... But when I didn't and we celebrated because I was cured! I still believed it would come back.
Ten years later, it was too late, I had thrown myself into so many different things to do ... 'Before I Die', that living abroad was out of the question. Although I know enough Spanish language to get by, it was no good for serious medical conditions. And if one thing didn't get you another would, so it would be the same with different conditions as we aged.
Having no children to call on, I decided against.
My hubby was disappointed somewhat at the time, but as his health as failed over the years, and both us having spent time in hospital in Tenerife, he's realised there would be difficulties, especially with a lot of the friends we've made over there, who are now coming coming back to UK because of various ageing problems.
We even considered building a retirement home for ageing UK residents. But that's another story.
Sorry to go on at length about things :ashamed:

Would you ever live there?

By the way, we sold the massive place and bought a smaller one.

We did consider buying at some stage, but after many deliberations, we concluded that when we retire we would be able to go anywhere (including Tenerife) at the drop of a hat if a good deal was available. Also some of our friends had considered it but they said that they would miss their grandchildren growing up. That NOW is a biggy for me. Isla has brought so much joy into our lives, I couldn't imagine only seeing her a few times a year. Right decison made.

Cancer is a terrible curse, it has no respect for age. I lost my mum to cancer at age 80. Two of my close friends had cancer and both are still with us, and as you say, it has changed their attitude to life. The bucket list has been brought forward and so far both of them are in remission/cured. Pray to God that continues.

It does make you very aware how mortal we all are.

What business were you in before retirement ?

Was it swimming costumes, fancy dress costumes, theatre costumes or just any old costumes ? :D

Fancy dress costumes mainly, some theatrical costumes, the BBC had them sometimes, character, promotion, and mascots. Had a team of over thirty seamstresses at one time as well as out workers. Have sent hula hula girl outfits to Hawaii, Eskimo costumes up to Norway and Iceland plus polar bears. And naughty girls costumes with accessories to the Arab States inc Dubai.
Used to supply Lerwick with most of their Up Helly A costumes at one time. In our early days we Once made a full size Chinese dragon to hold forty people. It was so long, and we didn't have the factory at that time, we only had a small workshop so we had to go into the nearby field to photograph it. We didn't have enough staff either back then so we asked anyone passing if they would step in, which they did....thinking they would be on TV....even though only their shoes could be seen.
We got them all set up in the field. No one inside the dragon could see outside so it was lead by the person out at the front. So there they were all lined up for a photo session when the horses at the top of the field, whom I'd forgotten about, suddenly noticed this intruder in their field. They came galloping down snorting and shaking their heads. The chap leading the dragon, suddenly saw them and scarpered.
'Run,' we shouted, but the the people in the dragon didn't realise until it was too late. What a pity we didn't have a video recorder in those days. We've had some good times in the 'FUNNY' rag trade.

Amazing coincidence ! I was in the ragtrade too for 23 years, starting as Work Study Engineer and ending up Factory Manager for Jaeger, Alexandra Workwear and Mackintosh weatherwear. Clothing trade died in West of Scotland and manufacturing sent abroad to Morocco etc. I was offered to go over to Morroco and set up factories there. But I declined and took the money. Also worked in the shoe factory before that so have always been around sewing machines and women !!

What a coincidence MM. Same happened with me. I used to exhibit at trade shows internationally until the Chinese got into it. They only made the cheap packaged costumes at first which was fine if you only wanted a chuck-away costume ... Size extra small. but if you wanted something more substantial we had the key. I sold the business two years ago, but at one time did consider going over to China and Korea for sewing work. But decided against it, I was getting passed the design stage by then. Costumes were becoming more and more elaborate, not so much in fabrics, but in moulded Eva, and latex etc.

I certainly have a load of good memories, although it was long hours and tough targets to meet. I had 500 people under me at one stage (mostly women). Looking back, I sometimes wonder how I suffered the pressure etc. Obviously a bit younger then and didn't know any better. That was just what you did to make a living. It was well paid though. Work at my own pace now and I set the targets now !

Lordy, don't know how you coped with all those. Thirty plus was more than enough for me. Mind you, with a small company you haven't got the amount of bosses and unions etc, so it does make for better working relations as it becomes like a family, and when there is only one boss to answer to the staff seem happier. If anything was required urgently or there'd been a mishap, both boss and staff got stuck in. Like you, looking back I don't know how I coped!

It certainly wasn't easy at times with a target of 60,000 garments per week and absenteeism up to 15% !! Every morning was a "game of chess" chopping and changing operators to match delivery priorities and required skills. Oh the fun we had !!

It was obviously a very structured management set up with loads of management reports being churned out to show how good or bad you were performing.

Having said all that we did try and create a family type atmosphere and I was never afraid to roll up my sleeves and do a bit of pressing and packing!

Life is now literally stress free and can easily mix business and pleasure.

Unfortunately I don't have a Scottish surname like you do. My great great grandfather was from Tipperary and his ship was docked at Irvine with a mechanical fault. During this enforced stay, he met my great great grandmother and the rest is history! I have only worn a kilt twice and I will be wearing one again in September at my daughter's wedding.

Yes, when I was about 8 years old, and about ten years ago at a trade show at the NEC we were dressed as punks with Stewart tartan, black wet look leather, punk wigs and pins etc. Is there any way photos can be uploaded onto here? I'll put them on if so.

Not really, as long as I am well prepared and know (roughly) what I'm going to say it's not a problem. I just remember that I am with family and friends so if I make a hash of it, it just adds to their enjoyment.

Have ever done any public speaking ?

Yes, but I don't like it.

Who does the cooking in your house, you or your OH?

Mostly me as I work from home and I am under the thumb !! I do enjoy a bit of experimentation, but I'm no Gordon Ramsey (except when it goes wrong *********

Do you enjoy cooking and if so what's your specialty ?

Steak - rare. I do the cooking, favourites - Home made steak, kidney and potato pie with three quarter inch thick pastry, and my own versions of Chinese and Italian.
Fish: I prefer from the chippy battered and with chips. Unless in Gourmet restaurant, then its Fruits de mer, with extra oysters.

What's your favourite?

Well done sirloin steak, hot chilli-con-carne, stovies, pasta bake, beef stew, liver casserole, etc etc I'm with you on the fish thing except maybe cod in parsley sauce.

What's the worst 3 things someone could say about you/call you that would really annoy/hurt you. Things that you know or believe not to be true ?
