SAINTS have been seeded for the first round draw of the Carling Cup.

Nigel Adkins' men, who are in the hat for the southern section, will find out on Thursday morning who they will play.

The fixtures will take place in the first week of the new season.

Saints will be drawn against one of the unseeded teams in the southern section.

This season's Carling Cup will feature a preliminary round for the first time since 2002/03, following Birmingham's relegation to the Championship.

With the holders being seeded through to round three, courtesy of their participation in the Europa League, the competition requires one less club in the first round draw.

That means the two lowest-placed clubs in the league system last season, Crawley Town and AFC Wimbledon, will play each other on Friday, July 29, for the right to get into the first round.

SAINTS defender Aaron Martin has joined Rickie Lambert in signing a new three-year contract at St Mary's.

The 21-year-old has put pen to paper on a deal that should keep him with the club until 2014.

Martin made ten first-team appearances for Saints last season.

His contract was due to expire in the summer, but a clause was triggered that automatically extended his deal until 2012.

But Saints have now moved to tie the former Eastleigh centre half to a long-term contract.

A late equaliser from Alex Chamberlain gave Saints a 3-3 draw in Switzerland against FC Biel-Bienne in their first pre-season friendly tonight.

Saints had led their Swiss second tier hosts 2-0 after 16 minutes, only for Biel-Bienne to stage an impressive recovery.

Saints took the lead after nine minutes when David Connolly was on hand to head in a Lee Holmes cross.

An exact replica – the striker heading in a cross from the winger – saw Nigel Adkins’ men extend their lead six minutes later.

The hosts replied midway through the first half when a shot from Marco Mathys was deflected past Bart Bialkowski.

Kaua Safari levelled five minutes into the second half, and the same player completed the comeback when he put Biel-Bienne ahead with nine minutes remaining.

But Chamberlain, one of the half-time substitutes as Adkins completely changed his side around, had the final say.

SAINTS have today signed Belgian winger Steve De Ridder.

The 24-year-old has put pen to paper on a three-year contract at St Mary's, though the transfer fee has not yet been revealed.

De Ridder moves from Dutch Eredivisie side De Graafschap, where he has scored 12 goals in 93 league games.

He is primarily a right winger, but can also play on the left side and as a striker.

Saints ended their pre-season preparations with a 2-2 draw at Yeovil.

Nigel Adkins’ men twice took the lead at Huish Park but were pegged back on both occasions and now have one week to go to get themselves fully ready for the big Championship kick-off against Leeds.

David Connolly gave Saints the lead just before half time before former Saint Paul Wotton equalised from the penalty spot on 62 minutes after a foul on Paul Huntington by Jose Fonte.

Jonathan Forte burst through the middle and produced an excellent finish to give Saints the lead again on 67 minutes but it lasted just four minutes before Andy Williams’ deft header made it honours even.

Alex Chamberlain was not in the squad due to the injury he sustained against West Brom.

Yeovil: Steer, Ayling (Gibson 87), Huntington, N’Gala, Ehmer, Jones (Edgar 61), Wotton, Upson, G Williams (A Williams 61), McLean (Fallon 61), Agard (Curtis 61).

Saints: Davis, Butterfield (Richardson 79), Fonte (Martin 79), Seaborne (Jaidi 63), Harding, Do Prado, Schneiderlin, Cork (Chaplow 63), Lallana (De Ridder 63), Connolly (Forte 45), Lambert. Att: 2018.

SAINTS continued their perfect start to the season as they secured a 1-0 victory at Barnsley.

Nigel Adkins’ men made it a club record four away wins in a row as David Connolly’s first half goal bagged a third victory of the new campaign which rarely looked in any doubt.

Saints were totally dominant with the only sour note being a three game ban for sub Richard Chaplow who was shown a straight red card late on and which led to his team having to desperately hang on and come perilously close to losing the three points they had thoroughly earned.

Good win saints.....

SAINTS booked their place in the third round of the Carling Cup with a comfortable 3-1 victory at Swindon tonight.

Nigel Adkins made five changes from the team that played Leicester last Saturday, giving Kelvin Davis, Jose Fonte, Dean Hammond, Rickie Lambert and David Connolly a rest.

In their places were Bartosz Bialkowski, Aaron Martin, Morgan Schneiderlin, Lee Holmes and Jonathan Forte.

And it was Holmes who was the provider for the opening goal at the County Ground, with Guly do Prado heading in his pinpoint cross on 17 minutes to put Saints in front.

The visitors deservedly doubled the lead after half-an-hour, with Guly playing in Jonathan Forte, who beat Robins keeper Phil Smith.

Mehdi Kerrouche gave Swindon a late lifeline, curling in a free-kick from the edge of the area with seven minutes left.

But substitute Lambert rounded Smith deep into injury time to add a third and seal the win.

Saints will face either Charlton or Preston at St Mary's in the third round.

Sorry for the late report........

RICKIE Lambert’s hat-trick gave Saints a dramatic 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest on another record-breaking day at St Mary’s.

Nigel Adkins’ men recorded their 12th consecutive home league win – a new club best – while also retaining second position in the Championship.

Forest had taken a seventh-minute lead through Matt Derbyshire, but Lambert replied immediately for the hosts.

The Saints striker grabbed his second midway through the half, with a back-post header, only for Radoslaw Majewski to level just before half-time.

However, despite being under pressure for much of the second half, Lambert rose to head home Danny Fox’s late free-kick, and give Saints a fifth win in their opening six matches.

And Pompey lose again.............COYR :bootyshake:

Saints have gone top of the Championship table after thumping Birmingham 4-1 at St Mary’s.

Goals from Rickie Lambert, Guly Do Prado, Adam Lallana and Richard Chaplow made it 13 home league wins on the spin for Nigel Adkins’ men.

The victory, which confirmed Saints’ best start to a campaign for 103 years, was kick started by Rickie Lambert’s eighth goal of the season, converted from the penalty spot on 11 minutes after the striker had been fouled by Steven Caldwell from an inswinging Danny Fox corner.

Guly Do Prado smashed home a rasping half volley ten minutes later after good interplay from David Connolly and Frazer Richardson to double the lead.

Richardson was involved again on 33 minutes as he cut the ball back to Lallana who finished first time right footed into the bottom corner to make it 3-0 at half time.

Birmingham gave Saints a scare as Chris Wood’s free kick pulled one back four minutes after the restart before the Blues threatened again with Stephen Carr hitting the post and Kelvin Davis saving well from Marlon King.

But the win was wrapped up on 78 minutes as Lambert found Lallana from the left sideline and the midfielder’s through ball picked out sub Richard Chaplow who calmly rolled it across the keeper and into the far corner to ensure three points and a table topping position after seven games.

Charlie Austin made it four goals in four games against Saints to give the Clarets a second half lead but second half sub Schneiderlin pounced with ten minutes remaining to rescue a point.

With Middlesbrough held to a goalless draw by Ipswich the point was enough to keep Saints top of the pile.

SAINTS remain optimistic that Adam Lallana will be fit enough to face West Ham tonight.

The goalscoring midfielder, who is so key to Saints’ form, didn’t quite make the game at Derby due to a foot injury picked up in training during the inter¬ national break.

Saints had been confident that he would be available to start the game at Pride Park, which ended in a 1-1 draw, but it became apparent in training the day before the match that he was still struggling.

As such, and at the start of a run of seven games in 22 days, Nigel Adkins decided to rest him with a view to a recall for the game against the Hammers at St Mary’s.

If Lallana, pictured, is fit and ready for action he will certainly come back into the starting line-up.

Richard Chaplow, who came into the side on left of midfield, is the man who is most likely to make way.

Dean Hammond is also hoping for a recall after being left on the bench at Derby with Morgan Schneiderlin and Jack Cork preferred in the centre of midfield.

Lets hope we get the win COYR........

SAINTS extended their St Mary’s winning streak and their lead at the top of the Championship in front of a record crowd tonight.

Jos Hooiveld’s excellent header from Danny Fox’s corner on the stroke of half time proved to be the winning goal on a memorable night at St Mary’s.

A pulsating second half saw West Ham goalkeeper Manuel Almunia pull of an outstanding save from sub Steve Ridder before the whistle blew on a win that puts Saints five points clear.

Saints have now won their last 17 home matches and this win against their nearest rivals was cheered by a record St Mary’s crowd of 32,152.

Southampton loan star Jos Hooiveld has admitted he would relish the chance to stay at St Mary's.

The 28-year-old is on loan at the Championship leaders until January from Celtic and he has made a big impression during his time with the Saints.

Hooiveld was the match winning hero for Southampton on Tuesday as he grabbed the only goal of the game in their 1-0 win over promotion rivals West Ham.

Now the Dutchman, who is not out of contract at Parkhead until 2013, admits he would be keen to prolong his stay with Southampton.

"My future? My loan period ends on January 1, 2012. I'm very happy at this club and would like to stay longer," he told the website of his management company SEG.

"But time will tell. I hope to stay fit, hope to continue to do well with the team and we'll see!"

Saints’ lead at the top of the Championship table has been trimmed to three points after a 1-1 draw at Reading.

Most of the action came in the final 20 minutes with ten man Saints in the end happy to get away with a point from their trip to the Madjeski Stadium.

Mikele Leigertwood fired Reading into the lead on 71 minutes after Jobi McAnuff’s free kick had hit the post.

Dean Hammond was sent off after picking up two yellow cards in the space of seven minutes but Steve De Ridder’s stunning strike with ten minutes remaining rescued a point.

GULY do Prado struck twice as Saints thumped Middlesbrough 3-0 to retain their position at the top of the Championship.

Nigel Adkins’ men produced another impressive performance at St Mary’s, as they won their 16th home league match in a row.

Guly netted a pair of headers in the first half, as Saints deservedly cruised into a 2-0 half-time lead against the meanest defence in the division.

The second half was a quiet affair, but it was lit up by a superb late goal from David Connolly, following some brilliant work by Rickie Lambert.

Saints remain three points clear at the top, after West Ham edged out Leicester 3-2 to remain on their coattails.

Saints have moved five points clear at the top of the Championship table after a 2-1 win over Peterborough at St Mary’s.

It looked as if it would be a stroll for Nigel Adkins’ men as Richard Chaplow and Jos Hooivled scored two goals in quick succession to put Saints 2-0 up after 17 minutes.

It got even better when Lee Frecklington was sent off for Posh for a second bookable offence ten minutes before half time.

But Saints weren’t at their fluent best against the ten men who made life very difficult by making themselves hard to break down and grabbed a lifeline in the game when sub Emile Sinclair made it 2-1 on 76 minutes.

However, Saints held to record a 19th home league win in a row and, with West Ham drawing at bottom on the table Bristol City, it gives them a five point cushion over the second placed Hammers and six over third placed Middlesbrough.

SAINTS beat Coventry 4-2 in a thrilling game at the Ricoh Arena to maintain their five-point lead at the top of the Championship.

Richard Chaplow and Adam Lallana had fired Nigel Adkins’ men into a comfortable 2-0 half-time lead, following an exceptional first 45 minutes from the visitors.

But a stirring Sky Blues comeback saw former Saints youngster Lukas Jutkiewicz and Clive Platt level for the hosts.

However, Guly do Prado’s header and substitute Steve De Ridder’s late strike saved the day and secured a first away success in six tries.

West Ham’s win at Hull means Saints remain five points clear at the top of the table.

RICKIE Lambert hit a hat-trick as Saints beat Brighton 3-0 to extend their St Mary’s winning streak to 20 games.

Nigel Adkins’ men remain five points clear at the top of the Championship, thanks to a devastating second half performance that saw off the ten-man Seagulls.

Lambert was the hero, heading Saints into the lead from Frazer Richardson’s cross, before converting a pair of penalties.

To compound matters for Albion, their right back and assistant manager Mauricio Taricco was sent off after arguing with referee Peter Walton.

Saints have now won their last 18 league games at home, and their last 20 in all competitions.

Adkins’ side stay five points ahead of West Ham, who won at Coventry, and are now eight ahead of third-placed Middlesbrough, who drew with Blackpool.

Saints strengthened their promotion chances with a 3-0 win at ten man Nottingham Forest.

Nigel Adkins’ side were in control for most of the match and took a first half lead through Guly do Prado.

James Chambers was sent off early in the second period for flooring David Connolly and Saints used their numerical advantage to good effect as they added another two goals through Connolly and Morgan Schneiderlin.

West Ham were the only other side in the top four to pick up a win meaning they and Saints remain joint top, now with 50 points, and have a four point cushion over third placed Cardiff and five over fourth placed Middlesbrough.

Nigel Adkins and his team secured back-to-back promotions with a final day 4-0 hammering of Coventry at St Mary’s.

Even before the game there seemed little hope of anything other than the win Saints needed to ensure a return to the top flight which they left seven years ago and it certainly proved that way.

Any early nerves were settled by two goals in the space of three first half minutes as Billy Sharp and Jose Fonte put Saints 2-0 up.

Full of confidence and knowing that promotion was all but assured, Saints were rampant in the second half against an already relegated Sky Blues team.

Jos Hooiveld and Adam Lallana added further goals to confirm Saints’ finish in the second automatic promotion place behind champions Reading and ahead of West Ham, whose final day victory over Hull was of no consequence in the end.
