New figures from the Spanish airport authority AENA show that popular destinations such as Lanzarote and Tenerife in the Canary Islands have seen an increase in the number of visitors in 2011.

Figures released by AENA show that Tenerife holidays enjoyed a 25 per cent increase in visitor numbers for the first half of 2011, while many British holidaymakers' favourite, Fuerteventura, experienced increases of 39 per cent in visitor number compared with 2010 figures for the same period. Gran Canaria, another hotspot for UK sun-seekers, also welcomed more visitors in the first half of the year, with 20 per cent growth compared to 2010.

The Spanish island of Lanzarote also enjoyed a boost in visitor numbers this year, with 20 per cent more overseas visitors than in 2010. The number of Brits heading to the island grew by 13 per cent compared with the previous year.

Spain has long been a favourite destination for sun-starved Brits seeking great weather, good value resorts and a wide selection of family-friendly beaches. The country as a whole received 8 per cent more overseas visitors in 2011 than in 2010. The boost was said to have come from increased numbers of travellers choosing Spain due to unrest in other holiday destinations in North Africa and across the Middle East, such as Tunisia and Egypt.

Tenerife and Lanzarote attract thousands of UK visitors each year thanks to the plentiful beaches and also other spectacular natural attractions. Tenerife's Mount Teide is the highest point in all of Spain and the country's islands, and the Teide national park attracts around 2.8 million visitors every year.

Egyptian security forces have fired tear gas to disperse pro-reform protesters who clashed with groups loyal to the ruling military council.

Demonstrators were marching to Cairo's defence ministry on Saturday when, witnesses say, they were pelted with rocks, stones and bottles by loyalists.

It was the second time in two days that crowds had attempted to march on the headquarters of the military council.

The protests came despite a pledge by the council's chief to build democracy.

In a rare public address, Egypt's military leader Field Marshall Tantawi had tried to defuse the situation.

He praised the youth who led February's uprising against then-President Hosni Mubarak, and pledged to build a democratic state which promoted freedom and the rights of citizens.

Field Marshall Tantawi said he would "pave the way for the pillars of a democratic state, which promotes freedom, the rights of citizens through free and fair parliamentary elections, a new constitution and the election of a president chosen by the people".

But the ruling military council, in a statement on its Facebook page, also accused protesters of trying to drive a wedge between the army and the people.

The army then blockaded the road with barbed wire and armoured personnel carriers and fired shots into the air.

Demonstrators said the march was a protest against the violent response of the military to another demonstration in Alexandria on Friday calling for political reform.

On Thursday Egypt's new cabinet was sworn in, the second reshuffle since February's convulsions that overthrew President Mubarak.

But protesters camped out in Cairo's Tahrir Square have kept up the pressure, and the military council is a target of the protesters' ire.

They accuse the council of failing to take radical enough action against Mr Mubarak and members of his deposed regime, and are demanding faster political and economic reforms.

The confrontation has been brewing for weeks, even perhaps since Hosni Mubarak was ousted in February, says the BBC's Jon Leyne in Cairo.

You can clearly see out on the street that there's a hell of a lot more people about, many restaurants are full and places like Veronicas and Starco have their much needed customers

Had to pop to San Eugenio tonight, about 9pm, the place was positively buzzing... From Scotch Corner right round to the Sky Park, bars and restaurants looked to capacity... Great to see :D

I heard that a lot of the Canarian beaches, including Fanabe have recently been stripped of their Blue Flag awards.

Let's hope that doesn't put the holidaymakers off eh ?

Of course it is karinagal.

I just can't understand how the powers to be allow these things to happen.

Fanabe beach is quite popular and for it to be stripped of it's Blue Flag is a disgrace, I think.

Do not care what you say about Tenerife, you could not get a better and cheaper life style. We have been travelling europe for the summer. We have paid high prices for everything everywhere we went in europe. Got back last week and got a bus from the airport to los cris and sat in a cafe for two hours just relaxing and enjoying the sun. The morning we left europe it was freezing. so please never moan aboutTenerife it is the best place you could live. Only bad thing i can say about tenerife it is hard to find good friends AND TRUST IN PEOPLE..

Well going by this thanks to the canarianweekly things are looking better.

During the first six months of the year, Tenerife has received a total of 2,471,622 tourists staying, representing an increase of 6.8% over the same period in 2010.
