2011 marks the 25th consecutive year that the Playa de la Arena beach in Santiago del Teide has been awarded the coveted Blue Flag. The beach is now the most awarded beach in Tenerife, which started its record in 1987.

The Blue Flag Campaign is a recognized symbol that requires compliance with stringent health and environmental levels; the presence of adequate sanitation, no spills, a rescue service, first aid and first aid on the beach. The award is based on four criteria: water quality, environmental education and information, environmental management and safety.

The La Arena beach is currently 175 metres long and between 50 and 75 metres wide with the seafront just 20 metres from the beach.

It has rest-rooms and showers, maintenance and cleaning, wi-fi; is free of architectural barriers, has special chairs for disabled people to enter the water in, jet ski rescue, lifeguard services and a defibrillator, some of many other facilities available to the public.

Mayor Juan Damian Gorrin Ramos said, "This award recognizes the work and effort carried out by local administration and concessionaires with a guarantee of environmental quality, care of the environment, accessibility and services, among other attributes."

Mayor Juan Damián Gorrin Ramos, Deputy Mayor Inocencio Doble, Tourism Councillor Ana Vanesa Sánchez and various members of the local corporation and maintenance personnel from the beach were all present when the flag was hoisted in a ceremony earlier this month.
