Don't live in Tenerife (yet) and due to health issues probably won't move there permanently - however hoping as time goes on to spend 6 months in Tenerife, 6 months in the UK

Owned property in tenerife for over 20 years now but still consider UK my main home.

I really enjoy my job and it fortunately allows me to take 5 or 6 trips over to Tenerife every year, so for now I feel I've got the best of both worlds.

No doubt things will change when I retire cos really wouldnt want to be an OAP in UK, couldnt stand the winter

Good Idea Tony, this proves the Forum is Half Residents.
I think that's great.
We must therefore see Tenerife as it is.
I believe the greater portion of the Other Groups is made up of People
with Links or an attachment to the Place.
The rest, well that remains to be seen...

Other - I volunteer in Tenerife. Main base of Atlantic Whale Foundation is in Arona, we study whales and dolphins, raise awareness, do the Teide Challenge (as a fundraiser) and from there we also coordinate other ongoing projects in West Africa, South America, East Asian countries.

I've been there in April-May, coming back in August.

I live in central Canada, so Tenerife is three plane rides away, 13.5 hours in the air! But we are coming for the first time in September for three weeks (two weeks in Fanabe, then another week between Madrid and Barcelona, due to flights not so convenient). This forum helped us make our decision as to what island was the best for us. Can't wait, and thanks to all of you for the info!

Make sure you tour the island and see all the wonderful things it has to offer. Go on a boat trip to La Gomera, Up Mount Teide on the Cable Car and visit the hidden beaches and coves all over the island.

You will have a wonderful time!

We LOVE Tenerife, we holiday at least twice yearly, if we could find a place to rent that we really liked we would spend longer and more times each year, we love Adeje to Porto Colon area near to sea. One bedroom with sunny balcony would be nice, regular yearly bookings would be made for right place.

Hasn't been easy at times but we have a roof and a income, so i don't think wev'e done too bad in just 3 months.
The hardest part, as you know, was making the final decision, but once the flights were booked there was no turning back.
Don't regret leaving, but do miss our family who are still there.
Looking forward to coming back on tuesday for a week & living like tourists!! ;)

My mum says the same.

I've only ever been to Tenerife the once (this trip is being covered extensively in my travelogue on this forum) but I would love to come back. I suspect I would strongly dislike the noisier, more British-oriented south of the island due to my suspicions that it would be like many other Southern European tourist resorts frequented by the British so I would prefer to stop in the quieter, more German-frequented north. Call it snobbery if you like but I like a relaxed atmosphere on my holidays.

Well if you dont actually live there you only need to keep enough money in the Bank to pay your bills, unlike if you are a resident.
"3 months" is the first time I have heard that. A lot of people spend more time there than that. Its always been 183 days. Where did you get that info from?

You are perhaps confusing - registering as a Resident after a continuous stay of 3 months and becoming a Tax/Fiscal Resident (usually, but not always) after 183+ days

You are perhaps confusing - registering as a Resident after a continuous stay of 3 months and becoming a Tax/Fiscal Resident (usually, but not always) after 183+ days

Well I wasn't confused but I am now?
As I said " If you spend more than 183 days in Tenerife you are required to register as a resident"
That still stands. If any more was required my accountant would have told me as I have been coming to Tenerife every year since 1987.

And would that be an accountant in the UK or here in Spain ? If UK based, he might not be up to date on local requirements, which are, anyone staying for a continuous period of 3 months or more is required to register - many don't, especially Swallows, others do so as to avail of the Residents' fares on flights to the mainland and island ferries - it has nothing to do with where you pay your tax :)

No. I have owned a property in Tenerife since 1987 my accountant is a well respected Spanish one in Los Cristianos and I have been with him since then.

We spend just less than 6 months here and make sure we go back to the UK after 3 months for a couple of days to save having to register as a non fiscal resident.

I know I'm probably just fussy but I cant help but think these non fiscal residents will be the first to be checked as to whether they are really staying in Tenerife for only 6 months a year, also, I read that you are supposed to de-register when you go back to the UK if you are a non fiscal resident and the thought of two trips to Las Americas police station for paperwork a year is enough to drive you to drink!...or drink more!!

NIE s can be got when needed....a passport is good enough most of the time. Yes, I know they are only valid for 3 months.

Checked it out and Doreen was right about the three months bit, so thanks for that.
I always go home for Xmas anyway and always have done so it doesn't affect me anyway.

We are booked for mid-March, can't wait! We visit every year, usually in the Winter/Spring. Would love to retire to the island in the future.
