Tenerife, Malaga, Alicante and Dublin made up four of the five top slots for flight searches by UK residents in the latest issue of a leading travel industry report.
The Travel Quarterly Review, produced by Experian Hitwise, showed New York in first place, with 4.64 per cent of all searches conducted between February and April 2011. European destinations making up 'the big five' aggregated more than nine per cent of total searches.
Altogether, Spain and her islands were favoured destinations by nearly 18 per cent of flight searchers overall - the biggest share. The US region made up 13.7 per cent of the total search volume.
"Countries in Africa, the Middle East and smaller parts of Europe all emerged as fast-moving destinations this quarter, with people searching for flights to a variety of countries from Algeria to Uganda.
The report author explained: "Last quarter Kosovo was one of the hot trending countries to feature in the list, and this quarter it is Montenegro, another Eastern European nation that is emerging as a new tourist destination."
In the world zones rankings, the UK overtook Oceania in the first quarter of 2011 as the fifth most searched for flight zone.
Australia slipped to fourth in the country rankings this quarter, with Sydney and Perth falling in the destination rankings. The dip for Oceania, in particular for Australia and New Zealand, is partly attributable to the increase in Air Passenger Duty which was introduced in November 2010, and the recent poor exchange rates between the British pound and the Australian and New Zealand dollars.
