The commercial centre of Los Cristianos needs to be in tip-top shape to satisfy tourists and encourage newcomers diverted from Egypt and Tunisia to keep coming back.

That's the view of Carlos Magdalena, president of the business association known as La Zona Comercial Abierta de Los Cristianos which was formed one year ago. The group represents 500 small businesses in the area (80 more than the original target) and run by people of ten nationalities.

In an interview with Spanish newspaper Diario de la Avisos, Sr. Magdalena said the commercial centre of Los Cristianos had to offer as much as possible to tourists and local people alike. The area covered by the association stretches from the Arona Hotel to the Playa de las Vistas and to Avenida de Suecia to the sea.

Sr. Magdalena said the centre of Los Cristianos was a very special zone and had to be treated like one. It needed as many services as possible and diverse facilities to attract and keep tourists and shoppers, to encourage them to return time and time again and to safeguard the future of the businesses within it.

Matters which the association would like addressed include:

• Proper adherence to street sales and cutting out harrassment of people by “travelling” salesmen, time share touts or excursion reps.

• Improvements to the facades of some of the properties in the zone which visibly need repairs.

• A better street cleaning service with more litter bins.

The association would also like to see a greater police presence to deter
potential pickpockets and more tourist information kiosks.

• A better street cleaning service with more litter bins.

Just back from Los Cristianos, not sure about more litter bins but from what we saw is the litter bins need to be emptied more frequently.
