Tenerife has so many beautiful trees. My avatar shows my all-time favourite : the 'Elephant Tree' in Plaza del Charco, Puerto de la Cruz. I don't know its real name. There is another in the Doctor's garden further up the pathway but 'my tree' is larger. The life of Puerto happens around that tree, children play, people drink coffee and cocktails, entertainers do their thing and parakeets squawk in and out of the trees. Small birds fly in and out of the giant leaves and dragonflies hover over the little fountains. We HAVE to go there every time we are in Tenerife. I was traumatised when the tree was harshly pruned in November last year but delighted that it is well now and very healthy-looking.
Do you have a favourite tree or plant in Tenerife?

The Scots Pine (Pinus Sylvestris) is one of my favourites. And it grows in most North West European countries, not only Scotland. (Even Portugal)

Margaretta I agree that the plant in the fountain at Plaza del Charco is beautiful, but it is not a tree at all.

It's a tuber or rhizome, and is one of very many varieties of ALOCASIA, a tropical plant. When I go to the plaza I always stop to take a photo of it and I guess I must have dozens of them by now. Here is one of them: (http://canarybird.smugmug.com/Weather/Weather-Tenerife-North/P3240008-mar-24-2001/1226944150_oK9VK-XL.jpg)

And Zara I also agree that the Flamboyant is a spectacular tree. I saw an amazing one in a little park in La Paz the other day. Here it is. (http://canarybird.smugmug.com/Other/Tenerife-North-Weather-2/i-B773SgR/0/L/P1090614-july-26-X-flamboyant-XL.jpg)

(as the forum is not working as always, I can't insert the photo and have to use the URL ..I think you had the same problem.)

Yes, I hoped that you would join in Canarybird and I knew that you would know the name of my favourite tree. I'm thrilled to know the name now....even if it is a rhizome. Haha! Could the one at the Doctor's garden be attached???? You haven't indicated your favourite or is it the flamboyant? My avatar is my second painting of the Alocasia and I'm hoping to paint all types of Tenerife trees in their settings. I have tackled the glorious poinciana and the dragon tree.

The Forum seems to be having problems at the moment but do you have a photo of the frangipani for Primrose? That too is gorgeous. I agree with Primrose.

The only way I could reply to your post was pressing the 'quote' button. The quote is below!!!

I am so glad you put this on Zara because I was actually going to post a thread asking the name of this tree. I am just in the process of sorting out what I want in my garden when it is landscaped and this tree is top of my list:tiphat:

I agree with Imablue that the Jacaranda is one spectacular tree and is perhaps my first choice as mauve is perhaps my favourite colour.

Here's another beautiful bush - it's not a tree, but I have it in my garden because of the colour: Queen's Wreath, botanical name: Petrea Volubilis.
If you want to look for one in a garden center here, ask for the botanical name, or just 'Petrea', which is an arbusto, not an arbol.

And I do have photos somewhere of the full tree of frangipani (botanical name of this white one): Plumeria Alba, The pink frangipani is Plumeria Rosa.

But at the moment I have at hand a closeup I took of one in the Canary Center in La Paz:

Margaretta I think it's a lovely idea of yours to paint your favourite trees of Tenerife and I admire you for that.

Will you be showing some of your paintings here?

Can you take photos of them and upload them here or to another thread? I'd love to see an enlargement of your avatar painting.

I have to correct myself in saying above that the rose-flowered frangipani's botanical name is Plumeria Rosa....it's correct name is Plumeria Rubra.

Another good subject to photograph or paint is the African Tulip Tree (Spathodea Campanulata) which blooms here from April to end of July.

Each crimson/orange flower is edged in gold which makes it look so striking. The trees I see in our neighbourhood are nearly finished flowering now.

Here's a little photo of one tree and a couple of closeups of the unusual inflorescence which looks like it has bananas amongst the flowers:

P.S. For anyone thinking of planting them in your garden, be warned that you have to regularly sweep up the flowers that fall. As you can see in the top photo, they do make a mess on a sidewalk, and the dead flowers can be slippery.

Thank you Brian and Canarybird. The lovely references are a treat and inspiring. I tried to upload some pictures but unfortunately have had problems replying to posts so will wait until it's sorted. Do hope there will be more......

Hurrah! I can message now. Yes, the Jacaranda will be the subject of my next tree painting and Sharon: those beauties are so tempting the attention of brushes and canvas!
Just a couple here from recent paintings but I tackle all sorts of subjects. I have painted other trees and flowers from Tenerife and my first was the dragon tree. But I am still learning sporadically so want to improve on the earlier ones. I take lots of photos for future paintings. So much to do. Looking forward to more results here but wouldn't use someone else's photo without asking permission first! Do hope more people add their photos! Lovely ones so far.

I agree the jacaranda is beautiful have just planted one in my garden. Also like the faux pepper seed trees which are similar to weeping willows.
