We are in PDLC for the next week or so, most of the restaurants we have eaten in so far are the usual tourist haunts with pictures of the dishes on offer and menu in 4 or five languages, they have ranged from ok to poor. Can anyone suggest anywhere thats better? Either traditional Spanish, Asian or fine dining would be great.

Thanks in anticipation!

Ha ha I had the same problem, it's not the greatest place in Tenerife for food, we didn't find much

Added after 11 Hours 20 minutes:

We went in the tucan as it was ranked no1 on tripadvisor - the food was really good but we went for my partners birthday with our then 3 year old daughter....

It was the quietest dinner service ever with ZERO atmosphere, when we walked in the entire restaurant stopped and looked at us (we're 23&31 Years old) - the average age of the diners was about 87, and that includes us desperately trying to pull that figure down!!!

Hope you found somewhere nice to eat while you were there! I'm sorry I didn't see your post before now, could have recommended Casa Miranda which we ate at a couple of years ago, it's just on the border of the old town & new town near the sea, right behind the Hotel Monopol. Very old traditional building & fine dining. Might be different now though, I don't know.

Sorry did not see this before now otherwise could have recommended several but a bit late now . but for future reference. :yum:La Bohiem just off the square is lovely only open evenings and Sunday lunchtimes. Petit Los Angeles near the Turquesa Hotel Punt Brava speciailty Fish in Salt but lots of other things on menu Also Titos a little out of Puerto at St Nicholas, also Rincon del Rocke again just outside Puerto but easily reached by taxi. But there are many nice Restaurants off Charco Square also right on the square is La Casona.

Cheers, will try & remember some of these next time we're in Puerto. Found Tito's by accident when we were looking for Monje Bodega in May & it was an absolute delight. Would recommend anyone to try it for a lovely lunch - the place is gorgeous & food yummy. Tito's Bodeguita, just outside PDLC, come off the TF-5 at salida 35, follow signs for El Durazno, it's on Camino del Durazno. Open every day (except Sunday) from 12.30 - 23.00. Tel. 922 089 436. I can recommend a small restaurant which is called Mario.
It is located next to the big square with the playground.
They offer italien and canarian food.

A good family restaurant for all nationalities is the Tiroler Alm, where Teresa and her staff have been serving wholesome Austrian and international dishes for over 25 years.

With indoor and outdoor service, cosy decor inside with booths (http://canarybird.smugmug.com/Other/Miscellaneous-1/i-8j99ChN/0/L/P1020590-feb-22-pm-tiroler-L.jpg) and tables, we often see group celebrations there as it's such a lively, homey atmosphere.

They will push tables together for a large group, with highchairs for small children.

Some of my British lady friends have their birthday or club parties there.

Portions are large but some dishes are available in half portions. There's also a children's menu.

Some favourites: wiener schnitzel (http://canarybird.smugmug.com/Other/Miscellaneous-1/i-VvbPjJ2/0/L/Collage-2-Schnitzel-L.jpg), apple struedel, sauerbraten, German panfried potatoes (http://canarybird.smugmug.com/Other/Miscellaneous-1/i-FJbSm8Q/0/L/Tiroler-Collage-3-pepper-steak-L.jpg), and Parisien schnitzel.
And you get GRAVY with many dishes - something not always seen here.:yum:

The Palatschinken is also good. It's a crêpe filed with apricot conserve, topped with powdered sugar.

Tablecloths and candles at night, always busy since the food is good and very reasonably priced. Closed all day Thursday and Friday lunchtime.

On the main Botanical road, across the street and down from the Hotel Botanico.

Wow Canarybird, you've got me craving German food now, not had any for a long time! We used to have a lovely German restaurant in San Miguel (they did wonderful steaks & fantastic palatschinken - & even sold their own homemade sausages) but sadly they closed a couple of years ago. We do sometimes go to Yaiza German restaurant in El Medano but it's quite expensive so it's only a special occasion place for us.

Although I live here permanently I had not yet visited Tito's restaurant until today. It's located in the San Nicolas area of Puerto de la Cruz, just before the large roundabout that goes off to the San Jeronimo area where El Campo is located, and in another direction to Lidl supermarket.

Today there was a group event and I went with a friend and was so very impressed with the setting and the food.

I knew the owners, a sister and brother team, when they were youngsters as I often visited the garden center of their parents here in Puerto, where I went to buy my roses and bedding plants, and where they used to help out. One can see the results of having plant specialists in the family, as the garden is brimming with tropical plants.

The menu is mainly tapas and they were superb!
I didn't take photos of all the dishes we had today, but you can see some of them, which I managed to photograph before they were all gone.

HERE'S a LINK (http://canarybird.smugmug.com/photos/swfpopup.mg?AlbumID=18600955&AlbumKey=f55f89) to the photos I took. It's a place I will be returning to and a perfect place to take friends and visitors.

I know I am way too late on this thread for the original poster but local knowledge is everything in any resort of the size of Puerto de la Cruz. There are so many choices We have our favourites but occasionaly step out of the box and try somewhere different. Mostly we wish we had not, sometimes we have had a nice suprise.

The Oregon down by the harbour car park was one of the these. 9 euro for multi course menu of the day, wine included, all freshly cooked and very good value for a mid day meal.

Proper restaurants we like (in no particular order) are:

Titos in San Nicholas,
Casa Lalla, El Durazno,
La Casona, Plaza de Charco,
Tirola Alm, La Paz.
Restaurant Adler, La Paz.
Monastir,

There are others but the above are the most consistant.

Last but not least The tennis club for a quick steak and chips, more a snack bar but great food. One day they will finish their restaurant conversion down stairs.

Excellent photos Canarybird. Titos Bodeguita is such a lovely place, we discovered it in May this year & I've not stopped raving about it since! Unfortunately it's not a place we can get to regularly as we live in the south but I'm determined to get up there again. Here's a photo of the pimientos de piquillo rellenos which I had & it was absolutely delicious. 1120

Oh those pimientos de piquillo do look good saltnpepper! I have made them myself stuffing them with salt cod according to a traditional recipe, but I know I would much prefer them filled with veal (or beef as it probably would be) and with that interesting looking sauce. I'm making a list of what I'm going to try on my next visit. :yum:

The pimientos are filled with ternera (think you've got a photo of the blackboard menu) - so that's beef I think. My dad had the revuelto which was also really good. :yum:

Hi S & P....yes I know the board says ternera, but that in fact translates as veal, but here I know they usually refer to all beef as ternera, and real veal as ternera lechal, but wasn't sure what it would be at this restaurant. It looks very good though! :)

Dixie 4 I have to differ with your comment on the tennis club restaurant being just a snack bar.

I think you may not have seen their dinner menu...not the plastic card on the tables which is just for snacks, but the dinner menu which is a little hard cover booklet with some really delicious dishes. You have to ask for it as it's not on the tables. They have some first class dishes.

One day in June I lunched with Megaloo and two other lady friends who frequent the club. We all had the same:

Medallions of pork tenderloin in Roquefort sauce with cranberry sauce and German pan-fried potatoes (bratkartoffeln). It was wonderful! I took photos:

http://canarybird.smugmug.com/Food/Food-2011/i-dRK8Pd3/0/L/Solomillo-Cerdo-salsa-L.jpg

And I had my birthday lunch there of their chicken salad with sesame seeds and honey-balsamic dressing.
So good that two girlfriends and I had it again for lunch today. I took photos:

http://canarybird.smugmug.com/Food/Food-2011/i-LzzbHPV/0/L/P1100639-chick-salad-lg-closeb-L.jpg

We had drinks and coffee afterwards and the total bill came to €11 each, including the tip of a Euro each.

Oh dear I seem to have put my foot in it here.

To me the tennis club is the finest food around. It is on my doorstep and Victor always gives me that welcome that others omit.

What I was trying to say is that if you are telling some one on the internet who has never been there it is an excellent menu but.......

At the moment it is as a snack/bar with guys coming in sweaty from the tennis court and carrying bags of tennis gear, correct me if I am wrong?

This does not defer from the quality of his menu and I would eat here in preference to anywhere else.

When he the finishes his restaurant down stairs it will be a venue hard to beat.

I love the place.

Hi Megaloo,
Sorry to hear that Victor is leaving the Tennis club, as you say such a nice guy and an excellent front man where nothing is too much trouble.

Four of us walked in late one evening and it was British club night so it was very busy. This did not phase him in the slightest within minutes a table was cleared and our order was taken off the proper menu and as always it was excellent.

I hope he does well in what ever he is going to do. I hope his replacement is just as good.

Dixie4 you're right about the young tennis guys coming in and thumping their bags around on the chairs.

Sorry if I misunderstood that you thought they just served snacks there.

I think I may have met Victor at the White Night party which was one of the few evening events there that I've been to.

The indoor area downstairs is now a hairdressing salon and physio/massage room, but there have been lunches where grilling was done at outdoor BBQs down there.

Look forward to having a coffee there with you and Megaloo some time where you're here,

cheers,

So no restaurant down stairs, shame. Never mind I am still happy to eat there. What happened to the original chef who had some connection to La Finca in La Longera?

Here in UK I used to belong to a squash club in my youger days with a very similar set up to Alvaros. They imposed a rule that all equipment rackets, bags etc were deposited in a holding area at the door. Another rule being that no one was served in the bar restaurant until presentable. (showered etc.)

I do think Alvaros is lacking something in this respect. It is not particulaly pleasant at times for non playing customers. I would suggest it to the owner but my Spanish is not good enough.

See you and Megaloo soon Wednesday is not far away.
