View Full Version : What cars have you owned?

I remember my first drive in a Hillman Minx - no power steering in those days, had to haul it round corners - a very heavy car, but loved driving it!

So, forum friends, what cars have you owned and loved/hated?

We were kind of asking for this thread, weren't we! Best I had was an Austin 1300. Wonderful utterly reliable car.

The worst car I ever had (I think) was a Citroën Xsara Forte - nothing but trouble and cost me a fortune in repairs. Has put me off Citroëns, though a lot of people swear by them. Maybe it was just a rogue car? :dontknow:

My favourite fun car was a Triumph Spitfire - reg SFE 932L, canary yellow !!! Now I had an Austin 1100 or 1300 not sure which . I took it for it's MOT and it was declared unroadworthy!! Subframe had gone and I think the rest of it had pretty well had it, so it was carted off to the scrapyard. That was a bit of a shock at the time!! :(

My real favourite car was the Jaguar MkII - lovely shape and so quiet and smooth running.

I had a Vauxhall VX490 (courtesy car)! Wow what a drive - nearly disappeared up my own **********!

Porsche Carrera to a Fiesta? Mmmmmmmmmmm.

Vauxhall Cavalier! I used to love them - had a Mark I and about five Mark II. Never the same when they changed to Vectra.

I once bought a 1300 Vauxhall Astra to try to economise...........bad move - so slow and sluggish. (This was an old model, can't comment on recent Astras).

I don't mind autos or a manual. If I was doing city driving again, I would have a manual.

I couldn't list the cars I've had either Sal - mind you I'd have even more trouble listing the men I've had!!!! ;)

Cars used to be so expensive.

My dad's first car was a 1946 Ford Anglia in in 1958.(12 year old)

It cost him £150 which seems cheap now, but at the time £150 was 3 months wages.

Lots of granny cars here, all driven by guys of about 22. Nothing like being overtaken on a blind corner by a 30 year old Ford fiesta.

Gosh, can't remember them all, but learnt to drive in a Chrysler 180, had various heaps after. Favourite cars I owned My old Granada, minus power steering (great for biceps & boobs ;)) Cosworth Sierra Sapphire (turned me into a boy racer :D) but my very, very, very favourite was my Jag XKR.... top of the range, 0-80 on -3 seconds ;), was better than sex and made me smirk every time I got into it.... How I miss that car, and how I sobbed when the new owner came to drive it away when we moved here!

I swapped down from a 2.0ltr Focus to a Fiesta 1.6 Zetec S and don't notice the difference on the road. Licence is £100 cheaper, insurance is cheaper, and it does over 40 to the gallon - take one for a test drive and see what you think. It's very little smaller than the Focus, but great fun. My first car was a Morris Minor Series E with the split windscreen and wipers that only worked in dry weather, since then it has mostly been a selection of Fiestas and Escorts - XR2's and XR3's - but have always wanted a Mini Moke!

I no longer care or give a penny for all my previous cars, and I've had a good few decent ones

Why ?

Because I now have a limited edition, #32 of 40 produced, Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged in vesuvius orange, which has been sooped up at Land Rover to 500BHP ! It has every conceivable extra even a fridge inside and active cruise control (slows down if car pulls in front)

But the main thing . . . . its ORANGE !

and Land Rover even put an 'O' in front of the bonnet Range Rover badges to show its a limited edition (ORANGE ROVER)

my first car was an hillman avenger, every time i turned right realy hard the wheel had to be re-welded, so i upgraded to an escort that i brought off my mate, it was battleship grey primer, it had been primed ready for a respray but i could not be bothered, then came one of my favorites the renault ts, a real sports car, but i had to prop the drivers seat up with a plank of wood because the seat mechanism failed and it would move forward when breaking and back when i accelerated lol, then the engine blew and it cost me £300(this was in the 80's) and i then sold it for £200:confused: then came a succession of vauxhall cavaliers, the last one had done over 90,000 miles so i had the clock turned back:o and part x'd it for more than i paid for it!! that was the rover a lovely car, i had that for a few years, then i got married and had a few Peugeot's and fiat's, now we own a peugeot 307 cc with leather seats, about 7 years old now but a great car, i went and ordered the new peurgeot rcz felline last friday £25,000 then cancelled it monday:ashamed: i could not get my head round the fact that the robing ****s wanted to give me £3000 for my beautiful car when i know i could get at least £4,500 private, well i am going to run it in to the ground now, it's only done 52,000 miles, well at least the £400 a month can go towards more visits to tenerife:D:D

My first car was a bright Barbie pink mondeo :o. It was given to me as a wedding present from my then husband. I actually took my driving test in that car and passed first time I still think to this very day I only passed as the driving instructor didn’t want the embarrassment of driving around in a pink car :ashamed:. Needless to say the car lasted longer than the husband did :crylaughing:

I've definately never been 'into' cars, so the finer points of road status are lost on me. You can be an ass in a Porsche, just as much as a Ford Escort.

One of my worst cars was the first I owned - an Austin 1100. Got taken by the dealer. It was a rust-bucket. Shame he went bust! But my worst of all car was a Skoda. Yes, one of the originals, not the VW ones. I'd had my car written off and lacking funds got this cheap car I'd never heard of. It ran fine, so long as the weather was warm and I parked on a hill. Well, needed petrol and could not get the petrol cap off. Then the windscreen wiper motor packed up and I went to buy a new one. Taking one cap off a multitude of springs shot everywhere! It was a non-starter in cold weather and this remained so unless I was pointed downwards on a hill!

The best car I had was a Vauxhall Omega, very comfortable, very fast - til the engine blew! I bought a new Nissan Primera and kept it for 10 years. It was fantastic to drive. Granted it's styling was not the best, but it was reliable, pretty economic, and a great drive. Shame about the truck that hit me!

Needing a space to carry equipment after the write off of the Nissan I got a Citroen Xzara Picasso, as they were discounted so much. I reckoned on keeping it a few months til I got my claim sorted. Here I am 2 years later still with it. The Citroen has great electronics and the interior display is excellent.
I looked at a Ford Kooga recently and the interior so dated and I could hardly read the dash!

Didn't Skoda become part of the Rolls Royce family? I know they are no longer frowned upon (as in the past) and many taxi firms use them too.

I would happily try one.

If I remember correctly, Rolls Royce was owned by Volkswagen for a period of time, and Skoda is (was?) part of the Volkswagen group, as is (was?) Seat.
Later BMW took over ownership of Rolls Royce.

My first car was a heap of rust in an Austin 1100. **** that I was I was supposed to go in and buy a car from a distant relative, but managed to go into the showroom next door!

My worst car was a Skoda that I got after my dear old Mini got written off.

Best car I have driven is a Lexus. God, so quiet and driving way over a ton and hardly aware of it.

Current car is a Citroen Xsara Pic. Great car for camping, humping the gear around, and driving down to France. Had it 3 years and aside of normal servicing costs me very little. Possibly switching to the C4 version.

Vauxhall Cav, loved mine they were my favs

Most of them were pretty poor to be honest.
I liked the Austin 1800 for the room inside.
The Astra Estate was a good car.
The Toyota was one of my favorites.
The Mitsubishi had a great engine, my eldest son wrote this car off on the M6 coming home from work at Man Airport.........I think he nodded off, luckily he wasn't injured.
The Citroen C2 was bought when all 3 of my kids were on my insurance and even then it was nearly £1,000 to insure.
Now I'm older I like the Honda because it's easy to get in and out of...........and no I'm not a crumper! Ha Ha
