View Full Version : Who is your favourite comedian?

My favourite of the latest bunch is Al Murray, but my favourite of all time has to be Dave Allen.

I had the privilege of being on the same bill as him in the late 60's and from that day to this I have never seen a funnier act.
It was on a large stage which you would think needed a lot of movement but, Mr. Allen just sat on a stool, as he did in his TV monologues, and just talked for an hour. No jokes as such, but just talked about everyday life.

The whole of the audience cried for an hour, it was unbelievable.

Who's your favourite, past and present?

I like Eddie Izzard and Lee Mack at the moment. Spike Milligan is probably my all time favourite.

OH and I were talking about comedians the other evening. He would choose Tommy Cooper but I don't think I could choose just one. It did prompt me to wonder if you can buy the 'Carry On.. ' films on DVD. I did love those.

Mine have all been named already.

On a different slant, I get amused by certain People Posting on this Forum.
I then wonder if Anyone will bite..
Someone usually does too even though its an obvious Wind-up.

Dara O Briain for the way he interacts with the audience. Rhod Gilberts story about losing his baggage in the airport brings tears to the eyes every time and finally, Peter Kay doing "Bullseye" is comic gold

God i nearly had a coronery there, thought you had a video clip of it, too early i know. I remember this from my childhood, and all the carry on it caused with some religious people. But if something is funny its funny. Its shame he doesnt really have much to say these days, but in my opinion no one can touch his early stuff, pure genius...i love this....pssst Betty!

Slodgie that must have been a great experience- I remember him well, didn't he always have a whisky (ey) not to upset anyone, by the side of him. Remember tho i was still in nappies then:D

In my day Cannon and Ball (being brought up as a northerner in London)

Then Robin Williams and (sorry Eddy Murphy)

and never forgetting Fawlty Towers !

Billy Connolly as well

Bill Hicks is mine... although he's dead.

Alive... I like Lee Mack. Very quick. Also, Ed Byrne and Ross Noble.

I used to love Corky and the Juice Pigs too, but they've now split up. Phil Nichol still does solo stuff, but it's not half as good as the group were together.

Oh... and Brendon Burns! Genius. The list grows the more I edit this post :D

I like some of his stuff. His TV show was a bit unfunny in parts, but he occasionally came out with pure genius. His stand up is a lot better. I bought his book last year. It was crap. It was like his stand up written down, but without the 'Boyle' delivery, it just did not work. You can't read it... you have to hear him say it :)

Eric Morecoambe for his one single line, "I am playing all the right notes, but not necessarily in the right order" this was in a sketch with Andre Previn the world famous pianist.

Also Les Dawson with his "Cissie and Ada" sketches along with Roy Barraclough.

I think part of being a great comedian is not having to swear to be funny as this is what many of today's so called funny comedians have to resort to.rolleyes2:

all my favorites have been mentioned, Eric morecambe, Les Dawson, lee mack and i also liked tony Hancock his dry whit was brill, but i also like chubby brown, he is the richest comedian never to have appeared on tv(except mr's merton show), and i know he is not everyone's cup of tea but the guy's had some bad breaks with his family life and has to be admired for the way he has soldiered on;)

Added after 5 minutes:

John Bishop is getting there, at least he doesn't f... & blind all the time.i met john bishop in plymouth a few months ago, we had gone there to watch our team walsall play and we where having a look round house of Frasier in the shopping centre, as we walked through the ralph lauren store there he was trying on a top, he asked me if it suited him and i said it would look better on james cordon lol, i asked him if he minded me having my photo took with him and he said "of course not" what a true gent;)

Didn't know they did a DVD.

The guy that plays Mrs Brown has 3/4 family members in the cast too.

Susief, his name is Brendan Carroll. You're right, he has all kinds of relations in it. The blonde girl that plays his/her daughter is actually his girlfriend in real life. I've seen him live. Wouldn't be my cup of tea normally but this is very good.

It's not something we would watch normally, but stumbled on it a few weeks ago! Thought he was very funny!
