There is a new company here which is pretty unique.
It is an Outdoor Misting company. It covers outdoor cooling for terraces/outdoor areas and also reduced air con bills by pre cooling the air by spraying out fine mists.
They also do low pressure systems to just plug into your outdoor tap which can be used for pets (mine now have theirs and are very happy now the summer is upon us!) and us as well (makes sitting outdoors a damn site more comfortable, that I can tell you!).
The company is called Canarian Mist (www.canarianmist.com), Hope they do well. Not seen anything else like it here before. :)

Do you think they would be any good for an apartment terrace? :)

Yep they also have them outside most of the casinos in Las Vegas. Helps in those soaring temps.

Hey there all

Totally missed this thread (boom boom).
Sorry..

GFG: These are great for terraces. We have got the low pressure one on ours which we love. The high pressure ones use a pump so cost more money but bloody nice in the heat we get here!! :)

Ed & welsh wendy: They are dead popular in the US and other hot places, took some time making it to Tenerife...ahem...no suprise there :D, but finally here and just in time for the Euros too. I almost melted trying to watch the World Cup last year!!

anto: the one at Taylors is great, I have had the pleasure of sitting under it a couple of times now.

There is a guy who runs a company called canarianmist (.com).
The best thing to to would be to give him a call or drop him an email and he will be able to help you. There is an office in Silencio but the majority of it is mobile.

Misting systems have been in use for over 20 years all over the world and below are some FAQ's

How does mist cooling work?

High pressure misting systems work so effectively because of the misting system pump. The pump pushes the water through high pressure mist lines and brass mist nozzles producing microscopic droplets of water. The fine mist of water droplets hits the hot air and flash evaporates to cool the surrounding air up to 20 - 30 deg F.

What are the components of a high pressure misting system?

The high pressure misting system is the most effective and efficient type of misting product. The components are:
High Pressure Pump: Fitted with an advanced 3-stage filtration system combined with a calcium reducer that dramatically reduces mist nozzle clogging. The 1150 psi pumps produce a mist so fine that it evaporates on contact with the air, cooling the air dramatically. These pumps are easily controlled by a timer, can spray with different frequencies and have a safety feature that prevents them from running when there is no water supply. A drain valve is supplied with all pumps to remove excess water when the system is idle.
High Pressure Misting Line: This mist line is used for all overhead misting applications. Brass mist line is used to create the fan mist rings. Our commercial grade mist line is available with various mist nozzle spacing depending on your climate and usage.
Misting Nozzles: These precision nozzles are fitted with an anti-drip system and are easily removable for winter months and maintenance

Will I get wet with Canarian Mist's outdoor mist cooling system?

It is a misconception that misting is meant to get you wet in order to cool you off. You won't get wet if the air is above 82 deg F ( 28 deg C) and you're at least 3' from the mist nozzles. Our high pressure pump systems produce such a fine fog that it evaporates and cools the surrounding air before it can get you wet. In dry hot regions mist cooling systems can lower the temperature up to 30 deg F.

Will the surrounding surfaces get wet?

As a general rule your surfaces should not get wet. In some instances if the temperature drops or there's an object less than 3' from the mist nozzles, there may be accumulated moisture on the surrounding surface.

Is there a lot of maintenance on a misting system?

No, maintaining your misting system is very easy and inexpensive. Simply change the filters about once a season and your calcium reducer every 2-5 years or more depending on your level of activity and water composition. The filters cost between 15-35 Euros and the calcium reducer 30-40 Euros. To winterize the system, simply unscrew all the mist nozzles and place them in a jar. Before reinstalling, let the nozzles sit in some white vinegar or CLR solution overnight. Install while they're still wet. Of course, if you'd rather not bother, we offer a complete maintenance package to guarantee perfect results all of the time.

How much water does a standard misting system use? What is the environmental impact?

One mist nozzle uses about 1 gallon of water per hour. A 15 nozzle system will use approximately 15 gallons of water an hour. So running the system for the peak 3-4 hours of the day will use a quantity of water equivalent to a load of laundry.

Studies have shown that using a patio mist system saves on air conditioning which uses considerably more electricity and produces a tremendous amount of residual heat. Also, pre-cooling your a/c compressors with mist is a great way to improve the efficiency of your hvac system.

What is the warranty on your products?

All vinyl tubing, compression and push-loc fittings shall be warranted for a period of five (5) years. All pumps shall be warranted for a period of one (1) year. Maintenance items such as nozzles and filters are not covered by this warranty. Liability for, and the exclusive remedy for, defective materials or workmanship, is limited to the replacement or repair of defective products. This warranty applies only to systems provided and installed by Canarian Mist, and is not transferable. Any parts found to be defective will be replaced at no charge by Canarian Mist, This warranty specifically excludes the following: failure of parts due to damage by accident, earthquake, fire, freezing, chemicals, or unusual characteristics of water supply, such as mineral and calcium buildup.

What is Heat Stress?

High temperatures, direct sun, limited air circulation, physical exertion, physical illnesses and some medications can lead to heat stress. The human body becomes stressed if it is unable to cool itself and prolonged exposure drains the body of vital fluids. One of the main effects of heat stress is Loss of Appetite; this is very concerning for any business in the hospitality industry. Read more about heat induced illnesses & prevention on the safeworkers website. Also the BBC health website details the effects different temperatures have on the human body. The American OSHA recommends misting as one way to combat these heat induced illnesses. Watch closely for symptoms of heat exhaustion & heat stroke if you, your employees or customers are exposed to prolonged high temperatures.

What are the costs in comparison to a normal Air Conditioning system?

The beauty of using a misting system indoors is that you don't have the doors closed. Many bars over here have the air con going full blast with doors permanently open. This has two very bad side effects 1) on your wallet and 2) on the environment.

To cool a average size local would cost about €650 fitted but the running costs would be as low as 20 cents an hour.
Misting systems can also be used to pre cool existing air con units.
By creating a cool zone around the exterior unit of a standard air con unit the heat transfer efficiency is greatly improved and the air con unit doesn't have to work as hard or for as long because the air being brought into the condenser is cooler. A scientific study by the Tulane University proved that this method of pre cooling can reduce air con bills by as much as 30%
