The Granadilla town hall have changed their plan for the Los Abrigos marine reserve because of conditions imposed by the ministry of environment in reference to the previous local council. The original plan was to sink a boat then create an artificial reef. That proposal was turned down by Madrid informed, Jacob Donate.
In the latest proposal due to the interest of the Instituto Oceanográfico de Canarias – Canarian oceanographic institute inside the reserve plan to make a nursery for octopus and cuttlefish, given the quality of the water.
The edge of the sea which would be protected is at the Jibitero point and would be 500 meters long and 200 wide, along a stretch of basalt lava.
As well according to the edict, the central executive has advised, “The placement was not set in the maps sent, there have been no studies made about viability and the information sent is limited therefore we would need more information about why this area should be saved how this would be done and what benefits it would bring the area”.
The municipal government wish to add to this edict making it a bigger project by identifying the areas which are used by divers as one of the areas named in the marine reserve they hope to make the most of this and promote businesses that might appreciate it. The projected marine reserve is an ideal area for divers. Of the ten named good diving areas in Granadilla eight are in Los Abrigos one is in El Medano and one in Montana Pelada. Los Abrigos right now has no dive centre after one closed due to lack of support. This promotion would give the chance to revitalize the area and add new businesses to the area.
The marine reserve is one thing demanded by the ecological group Ben Magec-Ecologistas en Acción and has been supported by the local fishing association.
