The prisons Tenerife II, Gran Canaria -I y II-, La Palma & Lanzarote have now a total of 2.903 prisoners a number which will increase notably in the next few months. Prisoners will be moved from the mainland repeat EFE using the prison service as source.
With the last 72 prisoners moved from Madrid the new prison Palmas II, situated in Juan Grande, in the south of Gran Canaria, now contained on the30th of August 258 prisoners whom 89 are women.
Las Palmas II, has a capacity for 1,200 prisoners, and will receive this month two planes with 140 more Canarian prisoners who are being rehoused to save them the double whammy of not only being imprisoned but also far from their families.
After that the Southern Gran Canaria prison will receive 162 Canarian prisoners per month from the mainland.
The new Juan Grande prison, was built with a 114 million Euro investment with 1,194 cells distributed in 16 modules, one which is completely closed one for incoming prisoners and outgoing and prisoners in transit, one for infirmary and the rest are residential.
As well it has a kitchen, a bakery, laundry, class rooms, a library, sports area, swimming pool, workshops and a communication building for visitors and lawyers.
During the construction of Las Palmas II there have been several novelties introduced, different to older prisons. The cells are now almost 13 square metres instead of the standard 10 square metres.
The secretary general of the prison service, Mercedes Gallizo, said at the opening of the prison on the 14th of July 2011, that 1500 Canarian prisoners are serving their sentences outside the islands.
The rehousing of the these prisoners will also help the ones housed on other islands as the service tries to house them on their home island where possible. As this helps with reintegration into society.
In Las Palmas I, which is housed in the Salto del Negro area of the capital, 873 prisoners are serving sentences and in the annex where there is an open third grade until where prisoners only return at night there are another 89 prisoners.
On the Eastern Islands on the 30th of August the Santa Cruz de Tenerife prison had 1.077 inmates of which 107 are women whilst the prison Tahiche (Lanzarote) counts for 301 prisoners with 29 women and in Santa Cruz de La Palma there are 53.
Also in the Centro de Inserción de Lanzarote “Ángel Guerra” rehabilitating centre there are 83 inmates and in Tenerife in the “Mercedes Pinto”, 169.
When asked about the prisoners continuing to stay on the mainland the prison service confirmed that this is sometimes for judicial reasons or simply because the prisoner had asked to remain away from the Canary Islands.
