THE number Spaniards emigrating to Britain has actually trebled, according to recent studies.
Around 11,000 moved to Britain in 2002, compared with 30,000 in 2011, according to Amparo González, head of the High Council for Scientific Investigations (CSIC).
González, a sociology expert, says the number of Spanish people who received their first National Insurance numbers in the UK to enable them to work went up by 6,000 between 2010 and 2011.
This, she maintained, shows an “evident” impact caused by the Spanish recession. But she stressed that moving abroad was “a costly and risky exercise”.
It required resources such as a human support network, sound knowledge of the English language, enough money to get settled until they find stable work and get their first pay packet, and no financial or family ties in Spain.
Research shows that the typical profile of a Spanish migrant to the UK is aged 35-44 with high qualifications and is financially comfortable,
He or she has plenty of information, and usually has a job offer in the shape of a promotion already.
And there are as many men as women moving to Britain to work.
“Put another way, people who have been unemployed for two years or more, for example, are less likely to leave Spain because they generally do not have the personal or family resources to do so,” said González.
“The current level of Spanish migrants is a new situation, but is largely because those who do so are much more highly-qualified than those who moved abroad in the 1960s or 1970s.
“And they tend to aim for countries where the move goes much more smoothly, thanks to the rights every EU citizen has in any of the other member states.
“The likelihood of their returning to Spain in the future is difficult to assess, but the Spanish Government’s refusal to recognise that emigration is rising rapidly is worrying.”
And she believes that the volume of Spaniards who have left the country for the long term, or for good, is probably considerably higher.
According to the Census of Spaniards Resident Abroad (CERA), 176,770 people have moved to another country in the last five years, but this is almost certainly just a fraction of the true figure.
But González said: “Only a minority of those who leave Spain register as residents with the Spanish Consulate in their new countries and, of the few who do, wait for several years until they are already established there.
“To this end the figures we have help us to detect emigration trends, at best, but they will never allow us to assess the true magnitude of the exodus of Spaniards.”

Councillor for the Environment, Ana Lupe Mora, said that the implementation of these works have meant hiring workers from different classes: agricultural engineers, foremen, farm labourers, nursery workers, admin officers and technical officers.
The work has been split into three phases, the first focusing on the infrastructure, the second is defending against erosion and the final phase relates to the vegetation.
There will be replanting, exotic plant removal, conversion of scrubland to high mountain heather, wax myrtle, laurel and thickets, brush and shrub removal etc.
In Vilaflor the tracks and trails will be improved; in Chío restore and refurbishment of trails and recreational areas by building new wells manholes and drainage for the park and in Fasnia in plant nursery work will take place.

The President of the Government, Mariano Rajoy, received Portuguese Prime Minister, Pedro Passos Coelho, at MoncloaPalace for the 26th Spain-Portugal Summit, the second such summit to be held since the two leaders took office.
At a joint press conference, the President of the Government explained that the meeting had focused on the agenda of reforms and fiscal consolidation that the two countries are implementing so as to return to the path of growth and job creation.
The President of the Government believes it essential that the European Union adopts measures to accompany national efforts aimed at speeding up their positive effects. In this regard, he said that the schedule agreed by the European Council on banking union must be followed. “Banking union is the EU credibility test. Adopting measures to ensure credit reaches families and SMEs and to tackle the serious youth unemployment problem is a pressing issue at both a Europe-wide and MemberState level”, he said.
In his opinion, banking union can only bring advantages. “There is no doubt in my mind about banking union or about everyone’s desire to achieve it. None of the twenty-seven Member States has a different opinion”.
As regards employment issues, the President of the Government stressed that any initiative in support of jobs for young people will receive his support. He recalled that the Financial Perspectives for the period 2014-2020 contain a heading of 6 billion euros for the promotion of jobs for young people. Mariano Rajoy also announced that the Governments of Spain and Portugal will intensify efforts to ensure the European Union adopts new measures over the coming months. “Being able to soon deploy the youth unemployment fund, the new cohesion funds and the funds aimed at the Common Agricultural Policy is a priority”.
Furthermore, the President of the Government said he is very pleased with the progress achieved by the labour reform approved in Spain and has no intention of changing it because it has been “highly positive, has increased flexibility in the economy and has enhanced our competitiveness”.
As regards SMEs, he mentioned the aid from the European Investment Bank and the announcement from the President of the European Central Bank, Mario Draghi, regarding support for this initiative.
Mariano Rajoy stressed his agreement with Pedro Passos Coelho regarding the fact that the European Union “can and must do more” to demonstrate the same effort as its Member States on ensuring the stability of the Eurozone. “There is no time to lose. The next few months will be very important for consolidating positions and joining forces”, he added.
He believes that the crisis has revealed flaws in the design of the single currency and doubts over its viability, meaning that Member States must send out a very clear message. “The Euro will not fail; Member States will emerge stronger from this crisis and Europe will remain our framework of well-being and shared prosperity”.
The President of the Government stressed that Spain and Portugal are two neighbouring friends and allies that share the same values of stability, democracy and freedom, and are proud of their deep-rooted pro-European sentiment.
The President of the Government believes that the sectoral meetings held by the members of both governments enabled relations and cooperation on various issues to be strengthened, as reflected in the joint statement.

Fishing approximately three miles off Punta Rasca, Palm Mar the Captain and two Russian clients had to be rescued by nearby boat Dotsy Too, after making a distress call.
The boat which specialises in big game fishing began to sink as it could not cope with the size of its haul; the rear hatch was left open and the boat began to take on water.
No one was injured during the incident and the individuals were safely transferred to their base in Puerto Colon. As to the fate of the Marlin that is not clear.

With refurbished facilities including a new swimming pool with three swimming pools the four animals are trained under the watchful eye of head coach Victor Pablos.
At the JunglePark you can find 100 different animal species, in 75,000 square meters of parks. It is also home to white lions, leopards, jaguars, tigers, orangutans, chimpanzees, reptiles, birds, vultures, eagles and countless animals from around the world.
The JunglePark looks after the welfare of animals in a constant effort to offer them an environment as close to their natural habitat as possible and it works closely with the European Breeding Programme.
Along with the new attraction, there is also the existing rope-walk – where it’s possible to walk through part of the park on fun ropes, bridges, passages and tunnels.

Tenerife showcased its tourist offer during the recent Mutua Madrid Open tennis tournament, held in the capital of Spain. Both the Minister of Tourism of the Cabildo, Carlos Alonso, and the CEO of Turismo de Tenerife, Miguel Angel Santos, commented that the event was “very positive.”
Tenerife Tourism conducted a dozen presentations of the island’s attractions to more than one hundred travel agents, airlines, tour operators and press, as well as the business opportunities to potential investors.
“The trends we have noted from tour operators make us cautiously optimistic ahead of the arrival of domestic travellers for the next summer season,” explained Carlos Alonso, who recalls that “Tenerife has been the only tourist destination present in this event.”
Miguel Angel Santos, meanwhile, noted that “for the second consecutive year, the action in this tournament has allowed us to strengthen relationships with the tourism industry and confirm the commitment of the tour operators and travel agents to Tenerife and we’ve enhanced the image of the island as a holiday destination among major media of the country “.
During the presentations attended by the tour operators emphasis was placed on issues such as the nature of the island and its volcanic nature, the wide variety of activities for the traveller, offering finest and luxury facilities in Tenerife with possibilities to host conferences, among others.
Over 200,000 people attended the tournament, it broadcasts on TV to approximately 15 million people. The Spanish market is second in importance to the Island with 1,185,000 visitors received in 2012 and a market share of 24 percent

Crimestoppers and the Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) have confirmed that it has achieved its 50th arrest from its Operation Captura campaign after wanted man Andrew Moran was arrested in Spain for an aggravated robbery that took place eight years ago.
Moran, 31, was convicted in his absence for his involvement in an armed cash in transit robbery that took place on the 23rd May 2005 in Colne, Lancashire, where Royal Mail guards were threatened with a handgun, machete and a baseball bat. One of the guards was assaulted before the offenders escaped with Ł25,000.
The trial for this offence took place on February 2nd 2009. In the judges summing up he stated that he intended to remand Moran in custody, at which point, he assaulted a security guard and vaulted over the dock. He escaped from the court and was subsequently convicted in his absence. The 31-year-old, from Salford, Manchester, was arrested in Alicante on Friday10th May.
Operation Captura is the successful multi-agency campaign that identifies serious criminals believed to be on the run in Spain.
Operation Captura has made seven separate appeals since Operation Captura was launched back in 2006, with 50 of the 65 individuals arrested by law enforcement across Europe.
Moran featured on the latest Captura appeal that launched in October 2011 when ten wanted individuals were released to the British and Spanish public.
Matt Burton, SOCA’s Head of Investigations, said: “Moran thought he could evade capture fleeing to Spain, frequently changing his appearance and using false identities. Like his partner in crime Devalda and the other armed robbers on the hit-list discovered though, there’s no hiding place. SOCA and its partners have the capability to pursue criminals relentlessly, track them down, and put them behind bars.
Chief Executive of Crimestoppers, Michael Laurie, added: “Operation Captura has seen immense success due to the effective partnership between Crimestoppers, the Spanish police, SOCA and the public, and I hope that through this partnership, we can bring the remaining 15 accused criminals to justice. “With the support of the public in Spain, the UK and further afield, we can rid the streets of these wanted individuals, and by passing information to Crimestoppers anonymously, I can assure you that they will never know who you are.”

They intend to reduce the number of older cars on our roads over the next few years.
The Direccion General de Trafico (DGT) accepts that vehicles are being kept longer by drivers because of the recession affecting the country so badly. But, with this comes safety concerns.
As a result, it means that the number of new cars manufactured and registered in Spain is in free-fall, which is causing serious dents in sales throughout the motor industry.
By 2016, the authorities want to reduce dramatically the number of cars over the age of seven years on the roads throughout Spain – including the Canary Islands, among other regions – by launching tougher controls including a “repair history record” of all vehicles registered in Spain.
Few details have been revealed about its devastating plan, although the DGT maintains that around 50% of vehicles currently being driven around are aged 9˝ years or over.
And even though many of them are deemed completely legal now – sailing through the ITV test annually – the authority intends to reduce the average age to a maximum of seven years by 2016 through increasingly stringent controls.
This will come as a dreadful shock to many owners, who keep their cars in roadworthy condition because they simply cannot afford to spend thousands on updating them – or because they are happy with them anyway.
At present, one in three cars sold in Spain is over 10 years old, which is a major concern for road safety.
In the first three months of this year, used-car sales have increased by 8.9%, which equates to 558,000 vehicles sold, compared with the same period in 2012.
That’s more than double the number of new vehicles sold.
Maria Segui, Director of the DGT, expressed her concern over the safety of ageing cars saying that age can “make the difference between life and death”.
By coincidence, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has pledged to invest one billion euros in Spain’s car industry over the coming weeks.
Despite ongoing economic woes and soaring unemployment, a total of 5bn euros has already been invested in the car industry in just over a year.
Rajoy made the announcement at a lunch for car company executives ahead of the Barcelona International Motor Show, which began last Saturday and finishes on Sunday.
The Prime Minister added that 12% of the country’s workforce was employed directly or indirectly in the auto sector, and that most of the jobs were highly skilled.

Yus Saenz began his career in AENA in 2002, as Associate Director at the Directorate General. Between 2004 and 2006 he held senior positions in the Planning and Management Control and in 2006 took over the Department of Business Plans Airport Development Directorate. He has been Chief of Staff to the Director of Malaga Airport, 2007 to 2011. Since June 2011 he was Director at Almeria airport.
Interestingly also present at the meeting was Mario Otero, the Director General of Spanish Airports and Air Navigation (AENA) in the Canary Islands.
At the beginning of April the Tenerife Cabildo requested that Mario Otero be dismissed due to a number of disagreements over many months, however, culminating in the “unspeakable treatment of the Cabildo during the welcome of the first flight of British Airways, connecting Tenerife to London five days a week.

The Anar Foundation Spanish charity has used a special printing technique which means that those looking at it from different angles see a different image.
So, for any person over 1.35m, the poster shows the image of a young boy and a message that reads: “Sometimes, child abuse is only visible to the child suffering it.”
But a child, or anyone under 1.35m, will clearly be able to see the poster boy with bruises and the message: “If somebody hurts you, phone us and we’ll help you,” alongside the European child helpline number.
The poster tells abused children where to seek help, even if the youngster is accompanied by his or her abuser.
The Anar Foundation was concerned that if the poster contained a phone number seen by abuser and child, the adult might try to dissuade the youngster from seeking help.
Grey Spain, the advertisement agency behind the poster, said: “It is a message exclusively for them, hidden from adults’ eyes
“It uses a lenticular to combine two images, and we have calculated an area visible only to children under 10 – and a warning for adults.”

She has enlisted the aid of husband Richard and pet dog Gizmo to produce what she describes as a “wooftastic tail”.
It’s a book entitled Nobody’s Poodle, about a loveable ex-pat pooch uprooted from his home in cold, damp, muddyEngland to start a new life inTenerife.
And it’s actually “penned” by Gizmo, himself a rescue dog, who writes, from a canine point of view, of course, about settling down in a new country and coping with the cultural differences.
He has also had to learn the language! As he explains: “Although woof-speak is universal, mas o menos, there are still some differences which need to be understood.
”otherwise, a dog can have muchos problemas with his furry Latin amigos.”

The ex-pat/travel genre has been popularised by some successful books, but until now the take on it by a man’s best friend has been little explored.
Nikki says: “We’re familiar with Driving over Lemons, but there hasn’t been a Bouncing over Bones.
“Most of Tenerife’s ex-pat Brits know and love Joe Cawley’s More Ketchup than Salsa, but we’ve all been waiting for More Saliva than Salsa.”
But Nobody’s Poodle is much more than an ex-pat diary, though. It’s a gripping story, with a plot that is the mutt’s nuts, so to speak.
Gizmo, the intrepid hero is probably more street Doodle than swanky Poodle, but he’s very much his own dog.
