Best area to be based for a week?

Hi. Will be visiting for a week at the end of Feb and want to travel round the island with a view to possibly buying a property at some point in the future. Can anyone suggest a best place to be based for this - somewhere not too busy, but equally with some stuff going on, and with a bit of character? Thanks.

I'd 'visit' google maps and zoom in to 'street view', and take a 'walk' around different areas

The Los Gigantes Carnaval starts on 21 February, lasts 5 days & nights. The area (south west) around there is definately worth a look for you as it has lots of character, it is quieter than the main resorts of Los Cris & Las Americas and is extremely picturesque, the main feature being the gigantic cliffs. Lots of info, pictures and webcams available on the internet as Atlantico has said.
