Newbie question

Hi folks,
We are travelling to Tenerife in June with a view to staying at least 12 months. I have been told by an 'expert' that because we are going for more than six months, that we wont get an NIE number, but need to apply for residency. Anybody any views/experience of this?

I got an NIE number as a holidaymaker as I wanted to open a bank account. Then 3 months after I moved here permanently, I got a Certificado de Registro. I think you can get both at the same time but there are certain documents you have to produce at the police station. Either way, you will need an NIE number
