The TF5 motorway at El Sauzal is the scene of multiple accidents every week, particularly in bad weather, due to the downhill bend and presence of a poorly-designed slip road used by vehicles to access the motorway from the north Tenerife town. Incidents cause gridlock on the motorway regularly and the island and regional authorities have at long last worked out a structured plan to improve the design of the short stretch. The first step sees the speed limit on the motorway cut to 80 kmh as of next week and the installation of radars, as well as a greater Civil Guard Traffic Branch presence, to deter speeders. However, the main measure will be much longer-term and will see most of the stretch moved underground in the form of a tunnel with much less of a bend. The plans, announced yesterday, have been widely welcomed by drivers who use the TF5 every day
